These people live in a very, very strange world, and it's a major reason their own view on what GG was bears, at best, only a passing resemblance to anything in reality.
In their eyes, there is no enormity which the United States as a whole is incapable, and they absolutely believe its entire history is an unbroken one of avarice, racism, deceit, and injustice. They believe this because of a combination of heavy indoctrination in their developmental years and the cults of personality they willingly immerse themselves in. Because of this, when GG happened, they didn't see it as a counterculture movement to their own bullshit (which it was), it was a justification that their own insane worldview where they're always right was legit, sort of like how religious fundamentalist Youtubers back in 2008 used to act like people making fun of them in the comment section was proof that the demons in their head were real and contacted them via Youtube comments.
What's fascinating is that it doesn't end there. Literally anything they don't like becomes part of the same beast. Criticism of the Last Jedi? Absolutely Gamergate's fault. People think Ghostbusters 2016 is a bad movie? Gamergate again. Trump?
Don't you know Gamergate did 11/9? I'm joking about this, of course, but
they legitimately believe that Trump appointed GG supporters to cabinet positions. They are
willingly misinformed, because the harder you over-react in their world, the more legit you are. It would be an absolute embarassment to anyone who possessed self-awareness, but in the ResetERA bubble, how much you can completely miss the point is seen as a strength.
