Mass developer layoffs have always happened in the industry. The round numbers are larger today because companies are larger and more established. They just used to go out of business.
He mentions a handful of companies getting "insanely wealthy" but that's exactly what happened always. The companies still around are the ones that did that in the past. The others stopped making games because they no longer existed.
They always talk about "consolidation" but more people are making more games on more platforms than ever.

We live in an absolute GOLDEN AGE of games right now, when you think about it. Have you guys ever seen another era where you can make a tranny dating sim and market it exclusively to nonbinary weirdos? Or make a game about gay dinosaurs going to high school? I regularly check a few of my favorite gaming news sites and every day there are three to six games announced and many of them are these weird little niche games you could tell were just somebody's passion project or a small team that got investment money thrown at them. And with heavily-supported platforms like Unity and Unreal, the bar for entry in game making has never been lower. The number of games released this year that I haven't heard of is probably larger than the entire Super Nintendo library.
Now, it's true that we're seeing some lessons learned in the AAA gaming sphere. Games were getting bloated and we're probably going to see more AA games, and I'm fine with that. I'd rather see a smaller game exploring new ideas, and it doesn't have to look like an Uncharted game. But I don't think we're going to see the end to "big" games, even then.

There is a lot happening right now. I've made the argument before that we're in a long crash. The exact time varies, I'd argue it's been since the PS4, some put it earlier, and some put it as late as COVID. Whenever you say it started, the result is the same. Major studios and publishers going under, desperation moves like exclusives going multiplat, pallets of unsold games being dumped in
The "bad direction" that ResetEra is concerned about is in part the wholesale rejection of wokeshit. Even the normies are waking up to the fact that Star Wars and other major IPs are just propaganda vehicles now. There was a study doing the rounds recently that 60% of zoomers and gen alpha spend most of their gaming time playing games over a decade old. In the same way the "GDC Scream" didn't do anything to stop people noticing woke consultancy firms ruining games, this ResetEra screaming at cloud because Cloud's game didn't sell won't stop the ideology ResetEra went all in on from collapsing all around them.

If you ruin the IP your licensed game counts on then nobody is going to want the game anyway, even before you notice the DEI stuff put into the game.

I love the crux of their theory is based on the idea that Iran could afford to "rain drones and missiles on Israel all day, everyday" while Israel would be fucked if the "infinite ammo and arms hose" is turned off.
You can just Google how much aid these countries get, but they never bother. They think Israel is some third world hellhole instead of a modern nation that gets a minor pittance from the United States so they'll buy from the US. Iran gets far more from a sanctions waiver on Iraqi energy alone than Israel gets from the US. But they think without US restraint Iran could grind Israel into dust instead of the other way around.
