Went to my kid's Christmas Play - classic gender roles and an ode to capitalism.https://archive.fo/qcf8Ehttps://archive.fo/qcf8E
First off, this is not an attempt to say how Christmas should be about the birth of Jesus, Virgin Mary and all that stuff. Completely understand that the story has little place in many people's lives and, as an agnostic atheist I don't really mind if the Christmas play has lobsters, crabs and other assorted oddities in it.

However, my kid's Christmas performance was pretty odd last night. He's 7 years old and it led to me discussing the concept of toxic masculinity, gender roles and the excesses of capitalism with him last night - not that I mind doing that as we've discussed these before but I didn't think a Christmas performance would have brought these up!

Classic Gender Roles
So, it started with a group of kids acting as a family standing with their backs to the audience. The dad turns round and says something along the lines of

'I'm the dad. I go to work all day long and I'm counting down the days to Christmas so I can have a rest'

Followed quickly by the mum turning round to say something similair -

'I'm the mum. I flap around the house all day trying to get everything ready for Christmas'

I don't live in an area with all stay at home mums, working dads and the classic family unit - both myself and my wife work, there are some single parents in the audience, so it seemed odd going back to classic gender roles. The dad then burnt the turkey because obviously dads can't cook, which led to him phoning Just Eat and having a Christmas dinner at the local restaurant on Christmas Eve. They could have easily switched the roles and it would have worked just as well. Or had two dads. Or two mums. Or both parents sharing the roles.

Ode to Capitalism
They had this theme of each letter being about a specific part of Christmas. The letter S stood for shopping which led to a song about 'Shop til we drop' and the students mimed out rubbing their fingers with lots of cash. I get that Christmas is a time for shopping for many people. but they could have done a song about shopping where the kids had to pick presents carefully, gave some money to charity. Just thought that it could have been an opportunity to maybe say to the kids that buying stuff isn't the most important thing in the world and putting a lot of thought into presents might be better.

I know I'm probably overthinking things but it was pretty odd - my wife and friends came out saying roughly the same things. Maybe the school wanted us to have these conversations!

"Transphobic rhetoric" for saying it's a form of sexual assault to hide your true gender from partners and "disingenuous sourcing" for what, linking a BBC article? I mean, maybe BBC is shit but I don't even keep track of news channels, never have.

Sometimes I seriously wonder how ResetEra stays afloat. I don't go there, but I wonder what their member count even is since they don't shed members off, they fucking shave them off.

They must be desperate for new blood if they warn users for conveying the thoughts of people in their physical vicinity. The rest was kinda expected.

I hope he doesn't get too fucked up by the witch hunt. I watch his programming videos, he's an anxious dude and I can see him stewing over this.
