NeoGAF & ResetERA - The Hilarious N̶e̶v̶e̶r̶e̶n̶d̶i̶n̶g̶ Splintering "Gaming" Forum Circus

Lets play a game: where is this from, gaf or reset?

"Halo: Like America, Halo was never great. People only played Halo because there was literally nothing else to do on The Box and the bar for console shooters was always very low. The series has been declining since Call of Duty crashed the party and I don't think the brand strength could possibly be lower in the hands of its 343. They burned all their good will on MCC"
Trick question. You forgot [USER WAS BANNED FOR THIS POST: MANSPLAINING].

Good question. Both sites have a major bias for PlayStation and against Xbox, both sites have a general disdain for Halo (ties into the first point, but also has to do with wanting to be contrarians about the series' acclaim and importance), and both sites happen to hate America on some level.

If I were to take a guess, I would say NeoGAF. If it was from ResetERA, that post would have had some points about how the series is all about "fulfilling the Male Power Fantasy", is incredibly xenophobic (because fuck defending Humanity, we should just roll over and let the Covenant/Flood/Forerunners kill us all), and should replace the Master Chief and Spartan Locke with muslim transgender lesbians in wheelchairs (or other such combinations).

Nintendo's social conservatism & their apolitical veneer of 'fun' are such BShttps://archive.fo/FmHsLhttps://archive.fo/FmHsL
The "Do people ever call Nintendo “kiddy” anymore?" thread made me think of the ways that Nintendo brands their corporate brand for decades with "family-friendly entertainment" that never tries to rock the boat or offend anyone (read: certain type of consumers). But in fact, this veneer of 'comfortable entertainment for all ages' is often used to deflect criticisms of the very conservative politics they put in their games. This has been reiterated over and over again with their incredibly dumb excuse of "not making any political statements" and that Nintendo "just want to have fun". Just think of the excuse to exclude non-hetero relationships in Tomodachi Life in 2014 with their shitty excuse of saying that they want to focus on 'fun' in their games and not have any politics. Instead of understanding and taking the feedback into account, their corporate branding strategy basically tells us that their version of 'fun' does not include other non-straight forms of relationships, as Dr. Todd Harper wrote back then:

"Both Nintendo and Pardo rhetorically position "fun" and "entertainment" and "gameplay" as inherently opposed to "socially responsible/progressive. [...] "It's very much disheartening to hear a company say they ‘value fun’ as an excuse for excluding gay relationships," Gaymer X president Toni Rocca said. For Rocca, using the primacy of fun as a logic for cutting diverse content is basically a cop out. "That's just valuing straight relationships, or at best saying that fun is exclusive to them," she explained"

And I was unfortunately saddened to see that as recently as this June in 2017 before E3, the PR mouthpiece Reggie Fils-Aime came out and continued this false and harmful dichotomy between 'fun' and political identities:

Which the website Femhype aptly skewered for its defense and maintenance of the status quo:

I am still rather disappointed that you continue to claim an apolitical stance when you clearly have not done so. The games you make all have their own political messages whether you realize it or not, and these messages can have a profound impact — both positive and negative — on the gamers who play them. By refusing to make a “statement,” you actually made one: that you prefer to maintain the status quo rather than try to step outside of the box and appeal to the wide spectrum of gamers you have in your fanbase.

And apparently this PR veneer of 'fun' seems to be working, as I don't see many people criticize Nintendo for their very socially conservative depictions of e.g. gender in the for example otherwise critically lauded Breath of the Wild. Somehow this game is wildly celebrated as an artistic achievement, yet its constant centering of the male Link as the hero of the story after decades of the same old conservative narrative, the key to Zelda's destiny is a tired sexist trope, and the game's casual transphobia as Jennifer Unkle for Paste Magazine writes:

"I don’t fault critics for falling in love with Breath of the Wild. The game’s willingness to throw out series staples and chart a new course is commendable. But I can’t help feeling bitter when I read the glowing acclaim, or eyeball its perfect review scores. Surely these same critics saw Link’s horror at Vilia’s face? When they praised the developers for showing progress, or Tweet about “thirsty Nintendo,” did the game’s blatantly transphobic joke not count as a step backward? The game’s disdainful stance toward my existence stings even worse when no one else acknowledges it as a problem. Should I let this slide as a small misstep and move on, or address a hurtful joke others ignored and risk looking oversensitive?"

As Feminist Frequency tweeted back in March and which is relevant for the current GOTY discussions surrounding the game:

I honestly think it's about time Nintendo wises up and evolves away from their very conservative approach to their games in relation to social themes and characters, and that gaming culture and critics don't turn a blind eye to their maintenance of the gaming status quo.

Dave Chapelle dropped new Netflix specials and the troons are screeching.

Anita “I Don’t Even Like Videogames” Sarkeesian is well-known for her personal, babyish, schoolgirl rival-like grudge against Zelda the character. Why do these morons bother taking her BOTW “opinions” seriously?

Because even though she's no different from every other fucking moral busybody of either political stripe, even though she's been repeatedly debunked, even though she is, at her core, a fucking coward who treats discussion of her asinine opinions as tantamount to allowing rape and murder, and even though she's likely to abandon it entirely when she's no longer attractive enough to be marketable, and even though she openly strawmans, presents false evidence, and steals Youtube footage rather than play the game she says she does, she pushes the narrative and that's really all that's important to these faggots.

At the end of the day, she's no different from every other shitheel running on outrage - a modern Al Sharpton and just as much of a crank.

Oh FFS - Nintendo has been apolitical for DECADES. They were taking out crosses, cigarettes, alcohol, and sexual content out of NES games in order to not alienate their audience.

Maybe they can ask Marvel Comics how their "let's make everything political!" strategy is working out for them?

As for Anita, I swear she's got some bizarre obsession with Zelda. Bitch acts like her mere existence is the reason why Trump won the election.

Speaking of Marvel, any idea about how ResetERA reacted to them canceling all of those failing comics?

Have they denounced Marvel? Are they in a hysterical meltdown? Depressed that "the Alt-Right/Trump/etc." won?

Funny enough Zelda in Breath of the Wild is probably the most fleshed out and human deception of Zelda yet. She is not just some girl you save but a full fleshed out character that feels like a real person. But that is still not good enough for Anita. It really shows that she does not care at all about the quality of the characters writing at all just that they do not violate any tropes she does not like.

Nintendo is smart to avoid politics. There two main audiences are children and adults who enjoyed there games as kids. Playing politics would only hurt those audiences and lose customers. There games may adapt to new gameplay but they don't want to lose the feel of what those franchises are about.

Edit: To clarify I meant that they don't follow political or social trends in development to please groups who demand changes to games. NoA is wrong for changing games both back then and now.

Zelda haven't been a simple damsel for a while. BotW had her battle Ganon for a century before Link showed up and in other incarnations she's been by his side with her trusty bow and light arrows to help slay the cursed pig demon. If she's sitting quietly in the castle it's been after already having laid the groundwork for Link to be able to save her and the kingdom. Or when not acting as a sadistic dungeon designer alongside the other Sages, Zelda actively helps the hero by either dressing up as a ninja, being an amnisiac pirate princess or an armor possessing ghost.

I, and presumably many others who grew up in the 90s, have never forgiven Nintendo for this:

Look, I can go on for fucking pages with this. Point of fact, we've seen what happens when you let NOA off its leash, and what happens is what happened to Nintendo in the 90s: Relentless censorship of politics, religion, the female body, cigarettes, death, violence, and Nazis, and Nintendo subsequently losing millions of dollars to competitors who did no such thing.
