This can actually work well, if you attach another layer to it. Have a meta-moderation system, where people randomly get assigned review duties to moderator actions. You have to review whether or not the promotion/demotion/ban/etc was justified.
Of course, you can make the metamoderation system blind review too, to avoid prejudicing the review.
Well-targeted reports by ordinary users can cause automatic assignment of minor janitor powers, whereas a mod that gets reversed a lot over time can be automatically sanctioned. Worked reasonably well on Slashdot, though how it would function in an entirely closed community like REE is not fully known...

They'd game it just like they already game the site with that eternally suffering "report" button. Plus I don't trust anyone involved in REEEsetera being technically competent enough to implement such a system.

In reality a system like that would result in a lot of bitching (well, more than there already is). People would complain about being sanctioned, about having their mod actions reversed, about not being selected to moderate (or meta-moderate), about feeling "pressured" to moderate if they are selected, about the system being anonymized ("I don't want to punish someone I like just because they made one bad call") and about the overall quality of moderation it produces. My best guess is it would result in far fewer overall outright bans and allow more legitimately diverse conversations, and we all know that's the exact opposite of what the inmates want in that asylum.

The result would be absolutely nobody being straight white men. Even though almost all of them actually are. So when all of them troon out, troons won't be special any more. The only potential difference, and this reflects poorly on ResetEra, is that it's quite possible that if such a thing were to be implemented, that the troons wouldn't even have to organise on a Discord - they'd be able to, out in the open on the forums, just 'Ugh, transphobe' a post, and the user would get an instant ban. And the mods already know that if they know what's good for them they won't cross the troon brigade, because the REEEEEEing will make it mandatory they quit.

They wouldnt even need to do that. "Orthodoxy means not thinking- not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness" (man we're just drowning in Orwell tonight) and thats exactly what Era is, orthodox. There is no communication, no coordination, necessary, because they've been indoctrinated into the church of troons and know the scripture by heart.
