Representation you can opt out of/choose to ignore entirely isn't representation. Ubisoft themselves have stated that 2/3 of Odyssey players chose Alexios, despite Kassandra being the "canon" protagonist. If Kassandra was canon, why not make her the sole character in the first place? Was Ubisoft afraid of alienating sexist gamer bros? Why go to the effort of voicing and mocapping two different characters when one would have done just fine AND been an important step forward in representation? Did they think a female-led Assassin's Creed wouldn't sell? Horizon: Zero Dawn has proven beyond a doubt that female-led games (open-world RPGs, no less) do sell as long as they're accessible (i.e. on a popular platform) and well-marketed.

So having a choice of a female character doesn't count as representation now.

Additionally, a selectable protagonist isn't representation because to avoid a ridiculous amount of work, it necessitates "gender-neutral" writing, and writing that is "gender-neutral" is actually just male-centric. Let's consider Odyssey specifically. Ancient Greece outside of Sparta was kind of hideously sexist, yet Kassandra's gender is never remarked upon, even when it really should be: For example, women competing in the Olympics wasn't just illegal, it was punishable by death - and you even get a sidequest dealing with that very subject... WHILE PLAYING AS KASSANDRA, A WOMAN WHO COMPETED IN THE OLYMPICS AND NO ONE SAID BOO. It breaks immersion completely and makes no sense. At the same time, Greece has a number of important, revered mythological and religious figures who are women, so the intersection of that and everyday sexism would have added a fascinating element to Kassandra's story.

Maybe this poster isn't being hypocritical, but it seems like the criteria for writing women "unproblematically" changes on the fly. One second gender doesn't exist, and female characters acting in a feminine way or experiencing feminine things is a sexist, "heteronormative" perspective. It's not a bad idea, having there be tangible differences in experiences and choices depending on which gender you play as, it's been done before and works well. No doubt people like this would have an issue with that though.

They aren't happy they got to be Kassandra the lady mercenary, no they are upset some people could be Alexios the mercenary man. To them the fact they there could be people out there, probably some white male bigots enjoying some sort of male fantasy is unbearable, it haunts them at night.

They even get mad that the game doesn't punish you for being a woman. I guess haven't a game where you are forced to be a woman stuck in a kitchen and if you try to have fun your husband comes in to beat you would the ultimate representation.

So now in this viking game they want you forced to be a woman but also have all the other characters treat you like one historically and demand you stop having adventures and start making babies. I don't think most people like the idea of being forced to play a certain character or role and be constantly shit on for it but I guess I could see why the Resetera crowd would love it. From what I recall about Assasins creed by the time we get to Oddysey it's about as historically accurate as a Pocahontas or transformers the movie with all it's strong warrior women and ethnically diverse cast.
