I actually feel kinda bad for dragonchild in that thread. He talked about researching firearms, illegal firearm accessories, and mass shootings for a tabletop game he was working on, and he discussed the difference between “inputs” (gathering information about bad stuff that happened) and “outputs“ (using that information to do your own bad stuff). He came to the conclusion that the guy should be punished for the actual illegal stuff that he did (possessing bump stocks, scamming the people he obtained guns from) but that looking up mass shootings should not itself be punishable, nor is it an indication that the guy planned to do a mass shooting using 90 guns at once.
