I just don’t follow why games crunches are special.
I mean, in so many fields it’s not realistic to staff full time for peak demand when the workload ebbs and flows. Talk to your local Department of Elections about how their life is this time of year. Ask your payroll department about year-end, especially if tax reporting is done in-house. Benefits administrators for big concerns haven’t had a decent Thanksgiving in years because they’re still processing, proofing and confirming Open Enrollment elections in November. System upgrades and conversions are infamous for crunch.
I guess there are more eyes focused on branches of the entertainment industry, but periodic crunches are pretty standard stuff.

They're not special, and as you say, a lot of occupations have crunch periods. It's just that a lot of these people don't have jobs, never will have jobs, and can't therefore comprehend that at times 'a job' involves very hard work.

They also get fucked on overtime pay.
It's also pretty dumb when you think on it, I mean you're not going to get 100% from anyone made to work a 100 hour week, you're lucky if you get 50%. It doesnt really help that it's usually associated with mega tripple A games who are rolling in money anyway and run by scum. I've worked in companies with the equivalent of crunch and you best be paying my ass time and a half and I work as long as I want. I've done my shift and I've yet to work for a company which can cultivate loyality.
It's cold day in Hell before I side with a corporations release date vs a working man.....even if they introduce them selves with their pronouns on twitter.

It also depends on how the company is handling it. If you're getting overtime, bonus pay AND 10% of the OVERALL profits the game makes spread amongst you, it shouldn't be a surprise devs as a majority will back an extra work day a week for six weeks. They want to get their baby released and all the monetary benefit for some short-term overtime isn't a bad trade off.

Yeah this is certainly true as I've said I've worked for bussiness' with 'crunch' or the equivelant, where it's incetivised rather than insisted-which is the correct way to do it since I don't care about the companys deadline outside of paychecks and frankly no-one should. The issue is there are a lot of bad actor shitting on their staff which is why its plausble Cyberpunk is doing this. We overall seem to be on the same wavelength here. My frustration is that now we can't be sure either way because the people saying it are trash.
My comment was more a response about downplaying crunch rather than downplaying reee's accusations of crunch.
