In the 1950s anti-Communist panic was at its height. It was very reminiscent of today's Cancel Culture, just the merest whiff that you might be a Communist would lose you your job, hollywood and the media went out of their way to blacklist and destroy the lives of countless thousands of people, almost all of whom weren't Communists in the slightest. The small number of actual Communists in the USA was tiny and they were almost embarrassingly ineffective, and certainly not a threat to the nation.

Replace "Communist" with "Fascist" and you have today's situation almost exactly. The only major difference was that McCarthyism was led by government, the Woke pogroms are being led by the media and tech companies.

Did McCarthyism succeed? No. Quite the opposite. The ludicrous show trials and general insanity led to a left-wing (but for the most part not Communist) counterculture that surged in the 1960s, because rebellious youth wanted to be part of these dangerous, underground, alternative ideas that the Man and their parents told them were super evil. With this base, the left seized control of culture, everything from music to film was starting to extol left-wing ideas. What was dangerous and suppressed became the dominant force in culture, and by the 1990s it had become the dominant force in politics.

McCarthyism's attempted suppression of the left and its attempt to shift the Overton window as far to the Right as it possibly could resulted in a cultural counter-push that has lasted 70 years. The current establishment crackdown on right wing thought will do the same thing in the decades to come. It was the Vietnam war that was the tipping point in that case, when the anti-Communist paranoia got so bad it resulted in a disaster that nobody could ignore. The swing-back of the pendulum just needs one inciting incident. Maybe the Capitol Riots were that incident and we've not seen the momentum build up yet, personally I think it more likely that something else will happen that's less morally ambiguous and makes sane people finally take a stand.

The key difference with McCarthyism is he was right. There were communist infiltrators.

Just like today, Hollywood and the media were protecting communists who were filling films and TV with pro-communist propaganda.

I'll note that something that isn't covered in the history books remotely as much as McCarthy's actions is that Communists (as in actual CP/USA members and what we would now call tankies) did exactly the same shit to their opponents as McCarthy later did to them. For instance, Dalton Trumbo, often cited as a victim of the blacklists, himself along with John Howard Larson of the WGA and SWG, participated in "canceling" writers seen as right wing. The ultimate unpopularity of this and actions by other similar Hollywood-related unions probably had a lot to do with how Ronald Reagan ended up President of the largely liberal Screen Actors Guild and started rooting out Communists.

Somehow, Trumbo's Wikipedia article notes absolutely none of this mutual history of cancel culture. I do admire one thing Trumbo said after serving his sentence: "As far as I was concerned, it was a completely just verdict. I had contempt for that Congress and have had contempt for it ever since. And on the basis of guilt or innocence, I could never really complain very much. That this was a crime or misdemeanor was the complaint, my complaint." So he may have been a bitch but at least he wasn't a punk ass bitch.

So while in the end they may have ended up more sinned against than sinning, the commies kind of started that shit and reaped the whirlwind. The real innocents are the people who may have attended one or two meetings as youths, or idealists fooled by Stalinist propaganda, although many of them rebuked Stalin and became Trots or just abandoned communism entirely.

Also I have nothing but respect for anyone who would rather go to jail than be a snitch.

McCarthy and his show trials might have been counterproductive, but US Rep and Greatest American Hero Richard Milhouse Nixon did really good work on the HUAC. He deserves as much credit as anyone for nailing Hiss.

Also question for Europeans here, do you guys not do night shifts for work or something?

We do, but it's mainly for those who are asocial or do work that's better done before the morning shift comes to the line.

Which is how it mostly is in the US as well, there was just a German man bragging about his parents working 9 to 5 in the thread for some reason, so I wanted to check.
