Neopets and Virtual Pet Sites

I've had the urge to return to my neopets account for many years now, but I was so young that I can't even imagine what username I tried to sign up with. Not to mention that whenever I forgot my username, I'd just make a new account.

Holy shit, neopets is still going?

Man, I remember when that was the shit. Unfortunately, by this point there's too much cash shop and other such stuff to ignore.

I am feeling nostalgic, though... are there any other similar things that aren't a shamefur dispray?

Jesus Christ, seeing this thread getting necrobumped from 2015 caused a wave of nostalgia to rush into my brain like a crack junkie’s drug-fueled endorphin shot.

Funnily enough I checked to see if two of my accounts (one from my childhood and another from a time when I got an itch to try it again). Shockingly enough BOTH accounts are still up after all of these years and I can still access the latter account while I can only watch as my original one suffers another decade or so of inactivity.

Heck, I remember /vg/ having Neopets Generals a few years ago. the one thing I remember them for is somehow getting an ex-TNT artist to sketch some porn of Illusen that was, for the most part, furry-free.
Holy shit, neopets is still going?
From what I’ve seen it’s still going to some extent, the death of Flash has made it somewhat iffy. My browser still gives me “not secure” warnings thoughout the site so, if anyone’s curious aout diving back in, I’d be careful.

Yeah… Neocash is still a thing, they apparently got into NFTs TWICE, and brought back physical merchandise.

The best thing you could probably get is a Tamagotchi, those have recently come back and they not as cringe-worthy.

Well… except for the licensed ones, those ones can be kinda cringe.

I remember playing it when I was 12, fun shit. You'd think having an app with all the web functionality will at least get a lot of people of my generation hooked.

One thing that I never understood was the dye items to get new skins for your pet. They were either all max price or private group auctions. Was there any whaling option to get them?

Neopets said they were lifting the “anti-lgbt” rules on their forum. Considering that the grand majority are probably woman or man children it wouldn’t blow my mind if grooming is a massive issue on their site.

You get the brushes from limited events, starter packs, game of chance or random lucky events. Sadly the only consistent way to find any if you have shit luck is the marketplace, but at insane prices :(

I played Neopets way back, but I was never consistent. When I'd return just made new accounts. I'd check it out for nostalgia's sake but I'm sure it's unrecognizable now anyway.

There was some ice cream site with tons of games, one was a very simple virtual pet. This mist have been 1999 or 2000. I can't remember that one in detail.

Looks like Neopets is being hacked right now:

A few years ago I did another playthrough of NeoQuest to see how it was, since I had fond memories of it as a kid.

It's perfectly fine as babby's first JRPG, but holy fuck is playing it like pulling teeth. Having to load a web page for every tile you move in a sprawling, mazelike dungeon is pure torture, and the thought that many people were likely suffering through this with dial up fills me with horror.

They never updated it? Kek.
It is odd, isn't it? Despite it's obvious fatal flaw, NeoQuest and its sequel were one of the meatier offerings on the site. I would have thought they'd get some kind of proper video game release, but alas.

Never got far in NeoQuest. I couldn't really understand English back when I played Neopets.

I was obsessed with Neopets when I was about 11. Loved playing the flash games until I discovered the RP forums and that I liked pretending to be a magic princess more lol.

Did anyone else have one of the handheld toys? I remember playing with mine until the battery died.

I had a lot of fun with Neopets back in the day but it's definitely on life support these days. It's kind of sad because Neopets itself probably would have translated well to mobile and I think they did try, but it was too late.

Aside from Neopets does anyone else remember any of the smaller virtual pet sites? I recall Marapets being the next "big" site after Neopets and it still exists today. Heck it might be in overall better health, but those communities have all waned. There were so many of these sites and I was really, really into them.

Yup. I remember Webkinz too. I'm such a young'un. Webkinz could never compare though because even though it was 3D with a customizable house and etc., it was like a Neopets you had to pay for. Also they forced you to buy a new pet at least every year (maybe closer to 6 months?) or else your account would expire.
Webkinz was super popular for a year or two during my early life. Hit my area at the time when my classmates could use the computer and just before we were too old for stuffed animals. Before this thread I hadn't thought about it in atleast ten years. Dunkey did a video on it a awhile ago:
MyDinos was a similar game I remember playing:

Howrse was another one. Great game initially, until it was bought by Ubisoft. It used to have events during typical event times, Halloween, Christmas, Easter etc. Then Ubisoft decided it would continue the events year-round, now it often has 3 events running simultaneously, none of which you can complete without throwing money at it. Previously you would be able to complete the events without spending cash if you kept on top of it, but not anymore.
That, and the entire site is basically ran by a top handful of players that work as teams and pour their entire wage packet into it. So you can't be competitive unless you're willing to join their teams and do the same.

The owner of Marapets is a faggot who had a bone to pick with Neo because he got banned many years ago. A bunch of other retards got mad at him for some of the pet costumes being racist, but it's not the worst stuff I've seen.
