since the duck pictures i post in the random pics & gifs thread are generally liked i felt like i might as well give them a thread for updates! (and for other people who go to duck ponds!)

as a disclaimer i don't feed them shit like bread or any carbs. currently i've fed them romaine lettuce, craisins, and golden raisins. i'm trying to get them used to non-garbage food currently.

this little lady is a muscovy duck, and she's the only one in the flock who is. she's one of the first ducks to come to people when getting fed. i used to call her a goose from her appearance before i knew what she was. she's also extremely patient when getting fed. good table manners except for the fact that she'll bully the other ducks.

here you can see our muscovy duck friend, but most importantly the little fella who likes sticking his face in mine. (sorry for PL here, i just wanted to leave both muscovy and the fella in the same pic)
he liked to put one of his little feet on my leg and nip at my fingers. he was very gentle compared to his other green-black brothers. out of them, he also has the most white on his chest. he would always be on one side of me, and sometimes he'd just hide behind me as shelter. as you can see behind me in the first pic, his other 'brother' is there, with the less saturated beak. he's much bigger and less gentle.

this light brown lady never shuts the fuck up. there is a good chance that whenever you're at the pond she's making a ruckus. other than that (and bullying and bossing around the other ducks like the alpha female she is) she's relatively well-mannered when i'm feeding the flock. you can also see the bigger black and green male with the less-saturated beak here. (and the muscovy lady)
now that everyone is relatively up to speed on the most distinguished ducks of the flock, i'd like to entrust fellow kiwis with a mission:

Naming the ducks!

i know from a certain 'name my cat' thread that this was a horrible idea but i want to see if anyone has some fun ideas that i can call these ducks in public without immediately getting detained. maybe i'll chock it up to a few rounds of polls for each duck.

also, post your own duck findings! maybe we can name them too if you haven't already.

sorry if this is a really retarded post. i've never made a 'serious' post like this before so i'm not the most experienced.

Ducks are bizarre, they look like animals that must have been made in a lab and couldn't possibly survive on their own in the wild, but no, Sabertooth tigers? Extinct. Velociraptors? Extinct. Wooly Mammoth? Extinct. Dopey little waddling birds that aimlessly float around in ponds and constantly look confused? Doing great.

As for the ducks' names, I'd name the big white one "big white duck", the larger green duck "large/r green duck", and the smaller green duck "small/er green duck". Any ducks that lacked notable traits one could use to differentiate them I'd name "miscellaneous duck" or possibly "assorted duck".

Btw, do the ducks let you pet them?

nope, not at all. as soon as they see my hand doesn't have food and i'm trying to touch them they bolt. it's actually a good technique if i need some space from them to stand up.
that being said, i've still managed to touch them. they don't like it though

They walk, they swim, they dive, and they fly.

Supposedly the progenitors of modern birds were small feathered critters who nested in holes along the sides of riverbeds. They could hide from the heat in their holes, and scavenge food from all the dead critters floating in the water. In other words, ducks.

everybody is present and accounted for except for muscovy. not sure if she sleeps somewhere else but i hope she's ok.
they all seemed to be asleep somewhere at first but after i called out they all came swimming towards me, so i think they recognize my voice at this point.
i'm pretty sure their night vision is limited so i threw the berries into the water and made sure they made a loud plonk for them to hear. they didn't like the celery though :(
my favorite little boy was one of the first to hop up on land, but after realizing he couldn't see the snacks very well in the dark he went back to the water.
the strawberries we got are too big so we're gonna cut them up and see if they like them tomorrow. might get some raisins too since they seemed to like those.
didn't get pics cause it was dark :(

If you were this nice to yourself, and yes. They recognise you, but only as a good thing that is going to happen to them. There are done trials on this.

It's not really a good thing to feed wildlife either, because they grow dependant on you and may die of hunger the day you stop.

they've already been fed by people; things like carbs and other garbage. my goal is to get them accustomed to and to prefer fresh fruits and vegetables instead of stale bread, which is extremely bad for them
