EU New cars to be fitted with automatic speed limiters across Europe from this week - can they be turned off? - Another hell for Europe

New cars that are sold in Europe from this week will host automatically-installed speed limiters, following the introduction of a new EU law.

Even though the rule to install the technology does not apply in the UK, many of the cars will have been made in Europe and so will feature the Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) anyway.

The technology allows the car to automatically restrict its speed based on GPS location, speed-sign recognition and cameras within the vehicle.

It does so by reducing the engine power until the relevant speed limit is met.

This is not done simply by applying the brakes, which could be dangerous, but by gradually reducing the engine's power.

However, drivers will first get a warning that they are driving too fast and be told to slow down before the measure takes affect.

The law will officially come into effect from this Sunday, July 7.

There are currently no plans for the Government to introduce a similar law here in the UK.

A spokesperson for the DfT told This is Money: "The Intelligent Speed Assistance laws coming into effect in July apply to the EU and Northern Ireland only, not Great Britain.

"We are constantly carrying out research into how transport users across all modes can benefit from the latest technology, ensuring journeys are safe, reliable, and cut emissions."

In the EU, drivers will be able to turn off the system every time they start their car. It cannot be permanently shut off.

Different thing, but in the States they are already fitting new cars with this bullshit Auto Start Stop function that turns your engine off at stops to save on emissions.

I just bought a new Outback and I have the manually turn this off every time I turn the car on, the only way to permanently disable it is to pay $100 bucks to some engineer who made a physical barrier to the function online.

It’s still dangerous. The tech often gets it very wrong. It sees signs and assumes that’s the limit. So for example maybe you’re behind a truck with the euro style limits on them and it recognises them instead of the actual limit. Or it scans a sign in a side road, when you’re on a fast road, and cuts your engine power. I was in a taxi with this activated the other week and it kept going off for side roads and random things. Incredibly distracting, and if it cuts your engine power on the motorway, dangerous.

But seriously, who thought this was a good idea?
The retards in charge. They absolutely love regulating everything so that normal people have to deal with constant surveillance, constant lecturing and being babysitted 24/7 and scolded for wrongthink. Western governments really like doing that to their electorate.

I thought it was going to be some kind of built in hard limiter that prevents a car from going over 90 or something. But sensors, cameras, etc? That's so finnicy. What if you're rushing to the hospital? What if shuts you down while you're crossing train tracks? What if it malfunctions while you're on the highway? Insane. So many edge case scenarios for no practical reward.

Even if the tech gets it right, it's still dangerous. While slowing down is often the safer course of action, if you have been driving for a while, you will know that sometimes the correct course of action is to speed up and pass quickly. And now, unless everyone slows down and just regularly drives 35 km/h under the speed limit, that ability to quickly pass will be removed.

Well this is just the first stage you see. First there’s the technology to get you used to being slowed down. Then it will be used to track you mile by mile. Then it will be automatic fines for being 1mph over, and then it will be that you’ve exceeded your carbon credits for the month. Or that you said a racism and are now banned from driving. Or automatic 15 min city penalty for driving into a city section you’re not allowed to

Thinking about this. I wonder how long it'll take to construct a wee clear plastic box with "60" written on the inside and mount it to the front camera...

It's great because it keeps cutting the engine whenever you're trying to roll out into another street which is exactly when you want that to happen. Thanks ford!

It'll come with GPS so the authorities can adjust your vehicle's speed limiter in real time. Attending an unauthorized gathering? Limited, stopped, and fined all without speaking a word to you!

Doesn’t Japan do this too? They limit everything to 120 mph. Car mod culture boomed over their due to people getting pissed about it.

So you're saying I have to buy the oldest and most polluting car I can find, got it.
There’s people who’ve unironically done the math and a lot of older cars have better mpg and are less polluting than a lot of newer cars.
