EU New cars to be fitted with automatic speed limiters across Europe from this week - can they be turned off? - Another hell for Europe

New cars that are sold in Europe from this week will host automatically-installed speed limiters, following the introduction of a new EU law.

Even though the rule to install the technology does not apply in the UK, many of the cars will have been made in Europe and so will feature the Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) anyway.

The technology allows the car to automatically restrict its speed based on GPS location, speed-sign recognition and cameras within the vehicle.

It does so by reducing the engine power until the relevant speed limit is met.

This is not done simply by applying the brakes, which could be dangerous, but by gradually reducing the engine's power.

However, drivers will first get a warning that they are driving too fast and be told to slow down before the measure takes affect.

The law will officially come into effect from this Sunday, July 7.

There are currently no plans for the Government to introduce a similar law here in the UK.

A spokesperson for the DfT told This is Money: "The Intelligent Speed Assistance laws coming into effect in July apply to the EU and Northern Ireland only, not Great Britain.

"We are constantly carrying out research into how transport users across all modes can benefit from the latest technology, ensuring journeys are safe, reliable, and cut emissions."

In the EU, drivers will be able to turn off the system every time they start their car. It cannot be permanently shut off.

Different thing, but in the States they are already fitting new cars with this bullshit Auto Start Stop function that turns your engine off at stops to save on emissions.

I just bought a new Outback and I have the manually turn this off every time I turn the car on, the only way to permanently disable it is to pay $100 bucks to some engineer who made a physical barrier to the function online.
wtf I thought I was going crazy literally hearing peoples vehicles shut off then have to turn on again at stop lights, this will definitely NOT cause any accidents what so ever.

Honestly anyone buying a new cart is a retard. They are all built with crazy shit that can be locked down or have the throttle body locked open so you cannot stop and you just mysteriously die!

I never drive my AMG anymore. I just drive my CJ and fuck appearances.

Thinking about this. I wonder how long it'll take to construct a wee clear plastic box with "60" written on the inside and mount it to the front camera...
60? 60KPH? That's 37 MPH. Even in the USA 60 MPH is barely sufficient. If you're not going 75 on the freeway in most places you're an old lady. And as for other places in the USA...

The retards in charge. They absolutely love regulating everything so that normal people have to deal with constant surveillance, constant lecturing and being babysitted 24/7 and scolded for wrongthink. Western governments really like doing that to their electorate.
For some reason I'm having visions of camels and bales of straw.

When you see a sign telling you a lower speed limit, you're don't have to slow down until you pass it.
When you see a sign telling you a higher speed limit, you can speed up the moment it's in view.
If big soy automobile tells me I cannot do the latter, then they are violating the NAP and must face the consequences.

I hate that auto start bullshit, it can't be good for the engine, even if it doesn't use the starter you are still constantly interrupting oil flow.

A lot of times you can just pull the fuse, check your box/manual.

my mom's vehicle has that. ive always wondered if starting the engine every time you are at red light really does save emissions. and when ive driven the car, it is such an annoying feature. i really hate it and i do consider myself something of an environmentalist,
This feature isn't an issue in a hybrid. It swaps over to the electric motor while the gas engine is off so there's no downtime before you can move. However, it is really annoying in a pure ICE vehicle that now wastes a few moments to restart itself before you can go.

as a motorcycle driver i do think this is a bit funny, people in cars constantly think people on motorcycles are a danger to others but realistically cars are so fucking dangerous to us and other cars.

on the other hand i think that this is the most asinine overreach ive heard of in quite sometime, I may not be born un Europe, but its not enough people in Europe get arrested for merely shit posting, now they must drive nanny cars.

waiting for the news headlines about the accidents this will cause.

Doesn’t Japan do this too? They limit everything to 120 mph. Car mod culture boomed over their due to people getting pissed about it.

Never heard of that. You're likely mixing up one of 2 myths/situations
1. There was a scene in Tokyo Drift where they drove past the max speed and the police didn't bother to chase them since their cars couldn't catch up. I asked my Japanese friend and he said its bullshit, and even if they don't chase you, you'll end up in trouble anyways.
2. There was an unofficial 'gentleman's agreement' in the 90's that the japanese automakers wouldn't make a car over 276hp. Noone strictly adhered to this. Everyone would market their cars as 276hp, but in reality the cars were much stronger.

Its also pretty difficult for most cars to run sustained 120mph.

Yeah, I have it on my ICE car and have to remember to disable it every time I drive. I think I read somewhere that is causes more wear on your battery. Any car spergs able to weigh in?
