New York education officials are poised to scrap a test designed to measure the reading and writing skills of people trying to become teachers, in part because an outsized percentage of black and Hispanic candidates were failing it.

The reformers believe tests like New York's Academic Literacy Skills Test can serve to weed out aspiring teachers who aren't strong students.

But the literacy test raised alarms from the beginning because just 46 percent of Hispanic test takers and 41 percent of black test takers passed it on the first try, compared with 64 percent of white candidates.

A large part of the problem is that the social sciences have long since rejected Biology or even general science itself. A lot of social science relies on a 'Tabula Rasa' ideology: That we are all born with a blank slate and we are no different from each other. I think there should be a required aptitude test for all teachers public and private, so they have a minimum level of knowledge, and get paid more for doing something as important as teaching the next generation of children.

Most people view teachers like glorified nannies. And the pay is so poor for trying to herd a class of 20+ children for an entire year and teach them things. Why would you be surprised when you put no effort, money or standards in your teachers and professors, you end up with a bunch of idealogical moron professors that put forward these stupid common core standards?

But I think it's too late now to fix the system, or fix the population at large. You have the media and culture telling people and especially blacks, learning is for idiots, get all your info from Tumblr, Youtube or wikipedia if you want to feel really nerdy. Why would corporations want an intelligent, self controlled, well adjusted person as a consumer? Why would Governments want those types of people as voters?

I hope you are right. But thinking about fixing things, it'd take more than just a change in policy. You'd have to start with families that let everything else but themselves raise children. Work your way through the education sector and remove politics, because it's basically become a religion that's poisoning schools abilities to give people the tools to make their own decisions. Then how do you deal with the instagram models who just post party pics and pics of themselves on the beach who make money hand over fist just in endorsements when they are basically on holiday all the time? The glamourization of being celebrated and famous and rich just for... existing?

It really doesnt help that half the political system shits all over teachers. If you were a teacher would you want to teach in Wisconsin after what Scott Walker did? Teachers wages are down there and theres been a lot more turnover due to teachers changing districts for higher pay. On top of worrying about 20+ kids they have to worry about their wages. Does that create a quality education system and quality teachers?

This is true enough, but if you are spending 4 years and taking out tens of thousands of dollars in loans, then 30k per year for a really stressful and time consuming job is not very appealing. There is a reason there is such a high burnout rate for teachers (esp in shitty schools).
