Newgrounds - Moderators and Administration

  • 🔧 Actively working on site again.
Very little on Newgrounds has aged well. I think it's a combination of nostalgia making people remember it as better than it was and people developing decent taste as they got older.

As for the reason it's a ghost-town, there are three big reasons:

First, Youtube stole away all the decent Video/Music content creators. No worries about shitty mods deleting your works, assholes getting you "Blammed" before your stuff is even uploaded, and all the other NG stupidity.

Hell, you can find almost all videos that were good on NG mirrored on Youtube these days.

Second, anyone with talent grew up and got a real job. Whether it's a legit job animating (Egoraptor) or making games (Various artists), or a skeezy job making custom porn (SpazKid), they moved on to things that matter and fatten their wallets.

And last, Flash games are obselete. Even the shittiest games these days are rocking Unity, Source, or Unreal Engine stuff, if not outright modded into games like Skyrim, GTA V, or a similar AAA game.

In comparison, Flash games run like garbage while being harder to make and work on.

I'm honestly surprised the site is still alive. I looked at it a few days ago and it has pretty much zero good content going into it. Seems to be clinging to life by using people's nostalgia.

In terms of aging and decent taste, when you look at the works on there, one can say there's stuff that's edgy and such and that's all assuming they all didn't get removed. Nostalgia is more or less the reason why anyone would see NG as aged today outside of any staff drama and what not. At this point, Newgrounds is like all the other old sites in just being a relic of the internet. It wouldn't be surprising if one found out how to get the flash games or movies off the site and keep them on a hard drive. If Fulp wanted his site to stay relevant with nostalgia, he'd leave an archive of flash submissions people came to his site for.

Man I remember playing games on newgrounds when I was a kid they had some really fun games, and some really wtf games. Not going to lie seeing newgrounds dying is kind of sad because of nostalgia but this sort of thing happens.
I have too many found memories of Newgrounds. It will always have a place in my childhood. I miss not having to deal with all of the crap that the adult world has to be inundated with on the horizon.

Has there been any autistic screeching about preserving the PRECIOUS KAHNTENT for future generations?

No, they're doing a Stalinist purge on anything that has copyrighted music in it, because they cannot afford the cost of fighting off a DMCA claim.

Tom Fulp's handling of his own site can be described as folding when he has a royal flush and bluffing with a shit hand. He had years of opportunity to stamp out both DeviantArt & Youtube & corner the market, but did nothing to compete until they started eating into his lunch.

It should also be noted that he avoided using ads on his site until it became impossible to keep up the site without it in 2005, missing out on potentially millions of dollars during the era of no-adblock and when ads were actually worth money. Up until then, they relied solely on T-shirts and stickers.

Doesn't Tom also piss away the money he made from that game company that he formed out of his best staff (thus depriving the site of people who know what they're doing) to keep its carcass floating too? If he is, then he not only is crippling his income by depriving an arm that actually is an earner for him of funds; he's also dumping it into a black hole to boot.

As for the site itself; my experience with it is its userbase is autismal and insular; believing themselves better than their peers because they have about as many of my posts on this site in a third of the time. The heyday for the site by my opinion was the 2005-2008 period, before the artists who were good left the site.

Yes, actually. Tom subtracted a number of vital staff from Newgrounds itself & used them to make games for his game company, Behemoth. The staff he cannibalized included Mike, the site's chief programmer. Mike was famous for creating native 3D graphics in Flash, which was how he was elevated to a staff position in the first place. Remember, he accomplished this feat in 2006, before the release of ActionScript 3. Of the people who have ever been part of the staff team, Mike, Tom & Ross were the only truly essential members of the site. Of the three, it could be said that Tom was the weakest programmer of the trio, with Ross leaving to work for Google. After that, you have Mike & Tom. After shuffling Mike to Behemoth, you had Tom & a sub-sector of mediocre programmers like PsychoGoldFish, LilJim & Rob, all whom of which were hired to run minor maintenance in the stead of their superiors while they work on actual infrastructure. Then Rob left, who was to his trio what Ross was to Tom & Mike.

So for programmers running Newgrounds, that makes Tom, PsychoGoldFish & LilJim, the latter two of which never did anything, really. I should also mention that Newgrounds was once run by about twelve people & has been reduced to four.

If there's one thing I'll miss about Newgrounds, it has to be the numerous groups who tried fucking with the site and its userbase. The Barney Bunch was brilliant when they flooded the flash portal with spam, donning vulgar click-bait titles pertaining to Drew Pickles. Shit was actually funny compared to the milquetoast Barney Bunch videos on YouTube. I managed to save a few of their .SWF's from a random day in 2005, but they're on a laptop that's been MIA for a decade now.

Other groups like the SS and DD were pretty funny too. They actually managed to fuck with the site more than the BB, but they lack the personality. Still though, nabbing Weekly Awards through mass-upvoting (via VPN or Tor) and hijacking the BBS mod accounts are a big feat.

Last time I've been on Newgrounds was when I was in middle school. There was some good stuff on it but I remember having to go through so much shit to find them.

Honestly, I thought the site went the way of the dodo after the Internet began to go to HTML5. I've been proven wrong once again.
