Newsweek Writer Declares POW/MIA Flag Racist

Maybe not, but remember in that long shitposty thread about the Confederate flag, where we mostly agreed that a symbol's true meaning is best determined by its usage, not its origin? I'd say that goes for the POW/MIA flag, too. Whatever the original designer's intent, it's the conspiracy-esque movement that popularised it and with whom it is most identified. To use a slightly Godwin-y example, burning crosses were originally used by Scottish kings to summon their troops to battle, but I would likely find few defenders if I decided to burn a cross on my lawn to signal my pride in my Scottish heritage.
You're definitely correct with the general concept you're talking about. However, and maybe this is just me, I never knew the historical background to the POW/MIA flag and I never heard about any crazies being associated with it. It was just some flag vaguely associated with military stuff. That's the extent of what I associated with it.

The worst I could say about it is that it is currently associated with some people who are conspiracy theorists.

That's bad enough for me.

Admittedly I don't have the immense respect for John McCain some people seem to.

I hate to break it to you buddy, but Canada also has people writing articles in newspapers that you disagree with. Maybe try Antarctica or the Moon.

So I take it Newsweek is now hiring any SJW they can find?

Makes me care for them less than before, I suppose.

I've met quite a few very bright people who would be considered conspiracy theorists.

Yeah, I know. Minor chimp out on my part. Apologies.

It's just that, its feel like if the country was a giant house, it's a house of leaking pipes, rotting walls, and completely condemned rooms. We have the power and the ability to fix things, but instead of focusing on these, we are more concerned about how well the draperies look. I realize that can probably be said about any other country out there, but that realization doesn't make having to deal with our idiots any more enjoyable.

It's like that, except people can't agree on what's the draperies and what are the walls.

Although maybe it's not like that, because any idiot can tell the difference between a curtain and a support wall, but the question of whether it's more important to prioritise border security or healthcare has no obvious answer.

Not just them, either, the "facebookification" of news means everyone has to cut corners now just to stay current, what was passable journalism 20 years ago was leaps better than modern stuff that frequently goes to press with glaring misspellings or sections culled right from Wikipedia, it's really disheartening that clickbait like this is needed to support the less looney stuff they used to print.

Now, you no-good kids get off my lawn!

We all do, I know a few who managed to live "The American Dream" of leaving America!
