Notable leftie Folding Ideas (who made a video essay about Nostalgia Critic's The Wall review and a video essay on Ralph Bakshi's LoTR movies) made a very long, very in-depth video essay regarding NFTs/cryptocurrency in general. Would definitely reccomend if you're curious.

It's a bit more than that. Dude uses the background of the 2008 housing crisis to frame the reasons why cryptocurrency exists and then goes on to discuss its shortcomings in the years that it's existed, discusses what NFTs are and goes in-depth on the people who've fallen for the grift of NFTs.
He does mention the environmental impact but it's a footnote in the entire thing. The stolen art is brought up, but again, only for a moment. The entire video essay is really worth a watch since it goes far far down the rabbit hole to contextualize as much as he can in the crypto/NFT sphere.
He also brings up crypto fans' counterarguments against his claims and tries to address those as well.

An NFT purchase is an investment in the prospect of humanity's imprisonment in cyberhell, aka the metaverse, the only "place" where the concept of digital property ownership can maintain an illusion of being not patently absurd.
I don't consider any involvement with NFTs to be ethical.

Singapore-based Chinese influencer and model Yuqing Irene Zhao earned S$7.5 million (~$5.5 million USD) in 10 days by selling a series of NFTs) that consist of images of herself in memes.

Zhao launched her IreneDAO collection in early January on Opensea. The collection consists of 1,107 items with a total trade volume of 2,300 ETH, equivalent to at least $5.5 million USD.

All 1,107 NFTs were claimed in the first 30 minutes, according to Zhao.

IreneDAO NFTs
IreneDAO started as a sticker collection featuring Zhao in various poses with popular phrases from crypto memes such as 'WAGMI (We’re All Going To Make IT)'.

Currently, the cheapest NFT, 'Have Fun Staying Poor', costs 0.94 ETH, equivalent to ~$2228 USD.

The images started as a sticker pack on Telegram, a popular messaging app in Singapore, and a fan of Zhao's suggested that it to be turned into an NFT collection.

Currently, big names such as Galaxy Digital CEO Mike Novogratz and YouTuber Logan Paul, who have bought into the IreneDAO NFTs.

Zhao created the IreneDAO NFTs with business partner Benjamin Tang to build “Social Collectibles", or "So-Col", a decentralised social networking platform aims to help content creators monetise their content and build communities with their fans.

Zhao explained to Cointelegraph:

IreneDAO started off as a social experiment to prove SO-COL’s core concept of empowering creators by connecting them with their communities via NFTs. The ultimate goal is to create hundreds or even thousands of such communities through the SO-COL platform. The communities could be large or small, and each community, together with the creator, will define the utility of that creators’ own “collectables.”

According to their website, the slogan for IreneDAO is SIMP: Simplicity, Integrity, Meaning, and Purpose.

Zhao was surprised by the results:

What we didn't expect was that our test case was an instant hit. In fact, I was not even aware when it was launched — I was out for a swimming lesson! By the time I came back from the pool after 40 minutes, the entire 500 NFTs were gone. I didn't even have one to myself!

Zhao graduated from National University of Singapore in 2017 and worked as a commodity broker before becoming an social media influencer in 2016 and pursuing a career in crypto in early 2021.

She also explained the switch and difficulty in making a living from being an influencer.

Not surprising, NFT peddlers have been trying to expand their marketing on Asia, especially SEA, due to the lack of knowledge of the population about Crypto and NFT outside it being "things that can make money". Hell, even some of my aunts and uncles are jokingly encourage me to sell NFTs as well during a family gathering

The scam keeps getting more interesting, now there are games made specifically for NFTs, you need to BUY NFTs to even play them.

For example, if you don't like Pokemon cards, you can buy Moglets: https://moglets.com/

Also there's this:

From the video alone, it's a 4/10, it looks like a very average indie platformer that could fit in a mobile app.

Also LMAO, I've never seen this much politicisation and unrelenting rage since Donald Trump's election. On Twitter you are appartently worse than Hitler if you buy NFTs.
Here's an example of NFT seething from a semi-popular animator who literally animated himself slapping a cryptobro.

In other news, Chris Chan is officially on the blockchain. yay?

I've zero interest in the majority of NFT shit. The only time I'd even consider buying/bidding on one is for an artwork that I genuinely enjoy, and to support the artist, but even then I'd do some due diligence on the exchange I was buying it on. Digital artist have long had a hard time breaking into or even been gatekept out of traditional art markets. Makers Place has a pretty nice feature where the original artist/minter gets royalties on secondary sales, something the traditional fine art world has always tried to scam artists out of. Good example of an artist who does fucking kickass work and sells them as NFT's on Makers Place is Peter Mohrbacher. I'll post an example of his work here.

Do I think there's a market bubble with NFTs? Probably.
Do I think it's being used for some shady shit and some people are being scammed? Most definitely.
But all in all it could prove an interesting way for artists to be able to monetize their work, even if we've got a long way to go before we work out the kinks.

What I am fucking sick off is shitty youtubers and retards on bird app constantly tryna dunk on it, then immediately being like "huh huh can't wait for the crypto bros to freak out on my post, free engagement? Yes please." We get it faggot, you're desperate for attention and ad sense. I dunno how you can muster the energy to be such a sped over something like this.

Maybe its just because of the sort of internet circles I frequent or are more aware of but I see way more people sperging out against NFTs than I see people sperging in favor of them. Maybe I'm wrong.

lmao I'm not spending 2 hours listening to the guy who thought it was a good idea to download CP from 8chan to prove that CP was being posted to 8chan

The whole nft thing has really made me realize a trend seen with modern day social media, every 1 to 2 years a new group is picked to be the punching bag , the group everyone can fling shit at with no repercussions.

In 2018/2019 it was anti-vaxxers and karens , people who you could make jokes at , bully , harass , hell even doxx without any repercussions from the hive mind , then 2020 rolls around and it switches to anti-maskers , then later in 2020 it went back to anti-vaxxers , now its nft bros, im sure if i went back further to 2016 or so you could find other examples.

Everyone can agree nfts are a stupid idea and only scammers and idiots really believe in them, but look at any discussion of nfts and it reaches near fed-posting levels of hate from the groups against nfts , its ridiculous

Like "muh environmental impact". They don't give a shit about the environment. It's just an excuse to feign moral outrage against a group that got rich while they didn't.

Its less to feign outrage and more of a excuse to do awful shit to people for nonsense reasons , look at all the youtube videos about how awful nft owners are , its ludicrous

People want to bitch about NFT grifts but will (even passively) support the years of bullshit that lead up to them happening without a second thought nor ability to put two and two together. Consoomers get exactly what they fucking deserve: abject disappointment.

At first people were just making fun of how ugly NFTs are, but now they seethe at it as if a machine somewhere in the world spews toxic gas whenever one is minted. Now they seethe at anything that involves crypto because muh environmental impact (soon after sending that tweet, they will likely go hit up an MMO with hundreds of servers around the world that serves players 24/7). Ordinary artists who aren't "cryptobros" get cancelled on twitter for the vile act of accepting crypto as a payment option, along with also accepting fiat money, or for contractually working on a project that produces NFTs. Support artists!

No doubt that some of it is astroturfed to condition people into seeing red whenever they see or hear about crypto, which will make it easier to introduce bills to surveil and restrict financial activity. Soyboys will vote for it and rejoice at this epic own against the cryptobros, unaware that such restrictions will also apply to fiat money, so instead of owning the cryptobros it affects everyone, such as their favorite disabled POC trans furry porn artist who will no longer be receiving SSI because they make a little too much money on the side.

I believe the rabid hate for crypto is 100% AstroTurfed by banks and governments to try and kill it by making it a political issue
