Pretty sure you're 100% correct on that. He was fishing for sympathy and reinforcement of his whining and when he didn't get it he did his best to backpedal. Nice Guys always seem mystified when their bullshit doesn't fly with people, they're always so convinced they're in the right.

They never seem to pick up that women and people in general don't want to consider someone as a potential partner if they can't get a read on that person, which you can't do when they constantly backpedal and never show you anything they're willing to stand behind.
It's not even a subconscious thing. It's just reasonable. Even if she thinks a nice guy is cute he's gotta make his interest explicit so she knows what he wants and they don't ever do that.
