As much as I’m loathe to run to Nick’s defense, I absolutely agree with this statement. If you haven’t lived on the poverty line in a major metropolitan area, then you can’t appreciate how desensitized one has to become to constant chaos going on around you. At best, another homeless person is having a drug-induced freak out again at 3am or your Iranian neighbors have decided to settle their marriage grievances again. And yes, sometimes it’s far, far worse and there’s not much you can do or react to outside of maybe calling the police, even understanding that that usually doesn’t make much of a difference anyway.

I wouldn’t say it’s the prettiest picture of humanity, but it is sadly a very understandable one.
