So back in 2015-16 Freelee the Banana Girl was peaking on youtube. Freelee would make reaction videos calling out popular non-vegan youtubers, which of course got her a ton of attention. The idea was that the more sensational you were, the more you talked shit, the more shocking statements and images you could throw in, the better because it would get more views and ultimately lead some fraction of those viewers to veganism. (Of course, this is also a good way to make yourself famous and sell whatever dumb 80/10/10 inspired ebook you're shilling.)

Niko was not on Freelee's level, but he was adjacent to her group and an active part of the vegan community on youtube. The vegan youtube community was very active in those days and inserting yourself therein and generating vegan content (endless What I Ate Today videos mostly) was an easy way to gain an online following and maybe even make some money.

So in Fall 2016 Freelee breaks up with her longtime boyfriend DurianRider, which was very drama and I won't digress into that right now. DurianRider was even crazier than Freelee and had coached her into the scantily clad drama whore that she was at her peak. The community had lost its bike riding, fruit eating, thai vasectomy getting power couple. Freelee was posting less frequently and not being as confrontational as usual and there was a bit of a Drama Vaccuum to be filled.

On the subject of Niko’s disordered eating, it’s worth mentioning that the vegan youtube scene of the 2014-16 era was fucked up in that regard. I’ll try not to get too OT, there was so much going on with these fucking people and their fucking crazy ideas about nutrition.

Earlier I said that I wasn’t sure what brand of Vegan he was, but after some poking around it’s starting to come back. It’s been a while, and Niko has deleted and/or privated and/or unlisted a lot of his videos. The earliest video that comes up on his channel page when sorting from oldest to newest is WHY I’M NO LONGER A VEGAN YOUTUBER from 9/1/16

There are many flavors of extreme plant-based vegan that were represented on YouTube. Niko was in with this general crowd, what basically started as the raw vegan crowd figureheaded by Freelee and some others. Freelee then made up a thing called Raw Til 4, which involves two raw meals and one cooked meal a day, high carb, EXTREMELY low fat and salt, no herbs or aliums, no calorie restriction. Among these vegans, individuals felt different types of ways about if and how much seasoning, nuts and seeds, fatty fruits, and green vegetables should be included in ones diet.

IIRC Niko was a mostly-raw vegan with a moderate fat intake compared to other popular vegans of the time (hence the Avocado in his name) and I cannot conform or deny just yet if he was actively preaching Freelee’s 40 Bananas A Day or Raw Til 4 by name but he was a part of that crowd.

These vegan diets, all proudly touting “NO CALORIE RESTRICTION EVER” were specifically pitched by Freelee to the food-addicted hams of the world as a way they could stuff their face with sugary fruits and white rice all day long while regaining their health and losing weight so they can be a flat-tummy beach babe like Her. This led to all kinds of hilarity, as you can expect. (Must. Restrain. Self. From. OT. Tangent.)

I am going to guess that Niko was already skinny when he found veganism. Starting from skinniness, and getting a somewhat-balanced vegan diet with fat and protein, it’s understandable why he didn’t gain a ton of extra weight like some poor saps did following Freelee’s ideas. He probably ate until he was full, which was ultimately not that much when you’re eating whole, fresh foods.

However, IMO it did introduce him to the idea of binge-eating. Eating a shit ton of fruit a day is fucking stupid and bad for you, and will definitely make you gain weight unless you do extreme amounts exercise like Freelee, but the caloric density of whole fruit is nothing compared to KFC. Once he broke vegan and started mukbanging with fast food, he was already in the mindset of absolutely stuffing his face with as much food as he wanted until he was bursting.

His flirtations with the extreme vegan world set him up for a food obsession and a binge eating problem. So now, of course, he’s cashing in on it.

Some understanding of the social culture in Korea/Japan is probably necessary for the phenomenon to make sense. Both countries have an overworked populace and most of us have heard of the NEET who can't or won't find a partner for whatever reason. In Korea in particular there's still a stigma against doing anything 'social' alone like eating, although that seems to be changing a little bit. Mukbangs were a ronery workaround - people could feel like they weren't eating alone.

There was always kind of a sexual element to some of it, but originally it wasn't a feeder/feedee thing. Fit (or at least not obese) and attractive mukbangers are still preferred, or at least entertaining personalities, but recently I've been hearing of fatter mukbangers that deliberately eat like slobs to get people off and obesity is on the rise, so...
