I think the switch 2 is in a weird spot where it's almost an inverse ps5. For the first 3 or 4 years of the ps5, there was basically ZERO meaningful reason to get a ps5 if you already owned a ps4 because everything was being put on ps4 anyways and the ps5 just wasn't enough of a jump in power to make a difference unless it was having to brute force its way through shit optimization like with cyberbunk.

On the other hand, the more games you already own for switch and the more you already use your switch, the better deal that switch 2 is due to the more than respectable bump in power, while if you don't already have a sizeable switch library, I absolutely wouldn't recommend getting a switch 2 unless there's something like mario kart or dk that you're just desperate for, because the games aren't getting any cheaper.

Pros:
-Better hardware? (But still beaten by the Steam Deck)

Cons:
-You have to pay for upgrades
-$80 dollar video games. Setting a shitty precedent in the industry.
-less affordable. (OG switch won due to its lower threshold)
-key cards/faux cartridges (gotta download)
-likely shit internet infrastructure still

Nintendo always had a reputation of selling systems at a profit. Switch included and likely Switch 2. The only confirmed systems in the last few generations being sold at a loss were the Wii-U and 3DS (after price drops). These were the two that really got me. The price of the console and games is one thing. But these two are just pure greed with extra steps. Imagine paying for a tutorial. WTF kind of universe does this make sense in? It should be a default feature that comes pre-loaded on your console. And they know the Nintendrones will buy those graphical upgrades for every applicable Switch game they own and make tons of excuses about why Nintendo is totally justified in charging so much.

The internet is mad as all hell over this. I own a switch that I may have played less than 10 times. My gf snatched it up and plays literally nothing but animal crossing and the retro libraries on it. But it keeps her pretty entertained so there's that.
I'm not even on the fence really about buying one but I'm just kinda looking at the fence and considering getting on there. I suppose it'd boil down to whatever From Soft has cooked up with Duskbloods.

Regardless of how similar the Switch 2 hardware is to the Switch, it will be awhile before it will be emulated successfully. First they will have to find an exploit, preferably a hardware exploit that can't be patched out, and it will have to allow for hypervisor/root access. Once they have that then the contents of the internal memory and games can be dumped. But even that won't be useful for anything until the encryption scheme is determined. Once that is done then an emulator can be made. Depending on how substantially similar they are luckily anyone who wants to make one can work forward from the Yuzu/Ryujinx source code.

But, even then, what hardware will be able to actually play any games will likely be limited, requiring at least an NVIDIA RTX 3060 or higher (likely a substantially more powerful AMD card since it would have to translate native NVIDIA calls), and a CPU with at least 8 cores (E or LP cores do not count) at an absolute minimum. According to this month's Steam hardware survey, less than 4 in 10 computer users meet those specs.

Given when Yuzu/Ryujinx became usable, I would imagine we won't see one that is usable until 2027/2028.

In most cases yes, but I've read that the ports the Switch 2 is getting are surprisingly well optimized. Cyberpunk's been touted as an example that works just as good as, if not better than the version on Steam Deck. Not to mention that the Civ VII devs have likened the system to a mid-range PC.

The rest of the cons are very hard to argue, even if the game card shit isn't as bad as it seems at first glance. I'd rather the devs just shell out for a larger cartridge at that point, at least it would go some way to justifying the cost of the game(s).

I get that Nintendo selling what amounts to DLC with the graphical upgrades is a pain, but the only game where this is a completely valid argument is the Pokémon game. There's a whole list of games already announced where the upgrade is going to be free because it doesn't include new game modes or extra content.

I won't tell you not to be mad at them for this, but it's annoying to see this being spread when it's not the full truth.

Switch 2 will play switch 1 games at a higher framerate and with minor graphical upgrades for free, including games with a paid upgrade. Major graphical upgrades and new features are a $10 upgrade, while major graphical upgrades, new features, and additional content are $20.
