Someone remind me what happened with the 3DS again? I thought that that sold well, although it's been so long I don't remember any news briefs from the time.

The 3DS underperformed so hard that Nintendo had to immediately cut off $70 from it's launch price tag. The day one buyers were given Founder's Edition status that meant they got some 20 or so old gameboy roms.

The 3ds had an extremely rocky launch to the point the price was cut from $250 to $170 in mere months, went on to decent success, but not nearly as big as the ds, but that was in large part to medium budget games disappearing from the industry outside of Nintendo and a couple japanese devs at that time, and small budget games moving from handhelds like the psp, ds, 3ds, and vita to phones.
 
I really want to hope it will flop badly because Nintendo is a shit company, but it's a shit company with the most autistic fanbase known to man. And you can bet once they make 80$ games the norm other companies will follow suit.

I hate the term "boycott" for this shit because it minimizes what it is, consumers not feeling the product is worth the value being charged. People say when this shit that "boycotts don't work" when, in my view anyway, I saved my money anyway so yeah, it absolute did achieve the goal I wanted

Switch has good games but we're already paying 60-70 bucks for their games, I might unironically get it early just so that I have a chance to homebrew it before it gets patched so that I can pirate the games.

Did the Gamecube actually "sell badly" or did it just sell less than other Nintendo game consoles before it? When the Gamecube was Nintendo's newest console, everyone I knew had it so it seriously didn't seem like it was selling poorly to me at all. Compared to the WII U I never knew a single person that owned one ever, all the people I knew who had the Gamecube passed on the Wii U and most of them passed on the og Wii as well so I can believe those sold poorly but the Gamecube? The Gamecube also gets a bad reputation for "having worse games than N64" and I think that's bullshit too.

The long and short of it is that the GameCube got bullied for it's appearance. Everyone thought the mini discs and design of the console in general was a joke. I've heard descriptions go as far as "that purple lunchbox".

That was basically the beginning of the divide with gamers. Nintendo was now seen as more "casual" and "kid friendly" while the other guys (PS2/OG XBOX) were considered more "adult/mature". That divided continued with the Wii/PS3/360 era.
