Should have looked deeper and saw the source of that was Chris fucking Dring, an actual retard who e-LARPS as having all these industry connections, relying on going viral and getting clicks for making up absolute nonsense wholecloth, while constantly displaying less knowledge of the industry than the average layman, betraying his lack of any actual sources/connections.
The other part was Neil Cuckmann spouting off nonsense about 90$ games

That's some bootlicking horseshit.

>buy new car
>drive car somewhere the manufacturer doesn't approve of (causing no damage to the car)
>manufacturer remotely bricks/disabled the car's ECM -- you only bought the hardware, sweetie, not the software
>also, no, you can't put your own software on it (we locked it down)
>it's illegal to reverse-engineer it to try anyway (it will also brick if it thinks you're trying)
>lol no refunds

Fuck everything about that.
Oh no! All those people who bought an $80 device just so they could spend even more money buying legal copies of games, dumping them (only for personal use and not sharing them), and uploading the dumped roms of games they legally purchased to this device have been screwed over! All 7 of them!

Yes yes, we know, and torrenting is all piracy and evil too, thank god we have infrastructure-destroying laws on the books (like the DMCA, which hasn't at all been abused, e.g. to attack this site) to solve that problem too so those precious copyright holders can sleep better at night.

Like I said, bootlicking.

One person being "screwed over" is one too many.

Snatch up all that hardware, though. They'll never accidentally decide your console is being naughty and brick it remotely, of course. Mistakes never happen, and innocent people never get hit by such perfect systems.

Honestly of the Rare games, only DKC 1 and 2 had a cohesive art direction, 3 was so-so, enemies designs were way more silly, the Bear Brothers and Banana Birds felt that they were trying a "children's adventure" aproach to that title but still worked most of the time, meanwhile on DK 64 we were struck with stuff like this:
B_Locker.webpTroff.webpDK64_Beanstalk.webp
Most of the stuff that worked were characters directly imported from the first 2 games and new additions for the DK crew, everything else was all over the place.
Now on the gameplay department, the game is clearly more a spiritual sucessor to the Banjo games than a sequel to DK 64, is funny seeing people complaining about the straight-forward approach of Bananza when they spent years complaining about how 64 was convoluted with multiple gameplay styles. Reminds me when people started complaining about how 3D Mario got streamlined and when Odyssey released people came out of nowhere to claim 3D World wasn't that bad and deserved a second chance.
Will defend DK64. While it is certainly more cartoony, compared to what we have seen of Bananza, it overall does a better job staying true to DK tonally. It has a darker aesthetic and character to it, full of dark mines, caves and factories much like Rare’s 2D titles. Even the jungle is fairly muted, more heavy dark colors.

In terms of characterization it was also a lot more inline. Rare gave DK this very 90s attitude and edge that made the series a little more mature. I feel this is the biggest sticking point as to what feels wrong about Bananza. It feels too kiddified.

DK isn’t his usual more adventurous leader self. While a dummy, he was always someone who can put the foot down and approached things with major confidence. Bananza DK is filled with millennial “relatable” traits, being much more of a boy failure character. Perfect example is comparing renders of DK in the minecart:

The minecart looks overly designed and DK is making le funny face. Also just feels overly colored to be as bright as possible.

Story-wise, same deal, it feels like it really wants to be some modern sappy Disney film. Instead of the more rebellious feeling DK Rap, we get some Disney-tier sad song from Pauline to make this seem more artful. Even the story reeks of a Pixar wannabe of big man protecting his not-daughter and helping her find her talent.

This is DK without the edge, a trend that sadly is not unique and has been growing for numerous platforming mascots in recent years (Ratchet, Crash). DK just feels the most blatant to me as it has the starkest contrast. Not to call upon /v/ sperging, but they are right in saying this game feels gay and women safe. It is every modern le quirky characteristic, purple/pink lighting and overly animating everything = soul.

I pirate (including emulation, of which I have at least 10 emulators installed right now) at minimum 90% of the shit I play. I'm just not delusional and/or retarded enough to be surprised when basic ass countermeasures are taken.

"Surprised" isn't really the right word. You should be angry that a third party can remotely disable hardware you've paid for, regardless of reason.

You should be ashamed that you are a thief, regardless of the reason.

The complaint is that the Nintendo game with the cartoon monkey is too colorful and cheery and not edgy enough.

I don't get where this notion came from that any notable amount of people genuinely tried to mod or hack the Switch 2 without any expectation of Nintendo retialiating, or that anyone should oppose or mock anyone trying to do whatever with their consoles. I'm not even seeing people complain about the potential that hackers have for stealing Nintendo accounts or any other black hat shit they could pull against policy-abiding consumers. It's all just an indirect admittance of "My experience with Nintendo products is severely affected by what people do with their own Nintendo products, even if I will never actually interact with such people within or through said Nintendo products.".

As long as they aren't lying or intentionally bullshitting, the people complaining about Nintendo as a company will never be worse than Nintendo itself or its fanbase. Complaints about how their games are can vary heavily, including being flat out weird, but my point still stands.

I find personal entertainment in prodding people that are so self-righteous about stealing video games, a luxury product meant to kill time that most of the world can't afford to waste.

It is amazing.

If they spent as much time actually playing the games they pirate, like I do, instead of bragging about how much they pirate and how much better they are for doing it and how everyone should be like them, and go out of their way to directly taunt corporations, maybe corpos wouldn't be locked in as much of an arms race as they are with piracy. A lot of the blame falls on zoomers who can't into the slightest amount of opsec, it was a rom site holocaust the moment an ios compatible emulator came out and crusty ipad kiddies just had to spend every waking moment bragging about something everyone else has had access to for many years.

As they say, "Discretion is the better part of valor.".

Honestly, my biggest issue with bananza is that they made a main villain who looks the way he does and named him "void kong" instead of "krunky kong".

Look at this. He's like a gremlin ate after midnight and fucked an aye aye and that child became a pimp

Seems fine elsewhere, this is just two different designs clashing more than anything.
I still have to disagree. DK just feels different as a character. Part of it is definitely the new design, but he just comes off as lamer in a way.

A lot of my grievances are ones DK fans have been expressing for years when it comes to Nintendo DK vs Rare/Retro. My main issue with Bananza is that it is basically the ultimate step into Nintendo, and Shiggy’s view of DK, which is that he is a dumb goofy ape.

Rare/Retro were big on making DK cool. He had a decent amount of maturity to him that made him seem like he can handle anything. Lazy, and a little bit goofy, but overall played the big man that would defend his turf amongst anyone who tries to mess with him. Bananza strikes me as odd as DK is far more dumb, constantly having wild expressions, sticking his tongue out like an idiot, etc.. In trying to make him so expressive, you lose that straight-faced, cool hero that he was in the former country titles and even some off titles like Jungle Beat. He’s overall too childlike, making him feel more like Mario.

The world design is also strange. DK is typically more grounded in terms of world: Jungles, Factories, Mines, etc.. The grounded nature did a lot to set him apart from Mario and sort of add to the coolness. This new game feels incredibly plastic-like, which is a weird choice given the Odyssey team just made a more realism heavy title.

Will Bananza be a good game, probably. I think my main gripe about it is that nothing feels DK about it beyond the characters being plopped in. DK is basically different character entering a completely foreign setting. I think this video explains me better, just so we can move off this topic, but my general impression so far is that I am just not vibing with this DK currently.
