I sure can’t wait to hear YouTubers talk about how Canada raising the price of a Japanese digital membership is somehow the mean orange man’s fault.
Mainline Mario, according to Nintendo, goes as follows:

Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA and Lost Levels), Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario All Stars, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, New Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Galaxy, NSB Wii, and Super Mario Galaxy 2.

This was all outlined back in the 25th anniversary booklet for the rerelease of Super Mario All-Stars on Wii.

Not anymore, the history video they released for Mario’s 35th anniversary showcasing every mainline Mario doesn’t fucking include Galaxy 2, presumably to hide the fact that they got lazy and skipped it in 3D All Stars.

Half the time when discussing Mario games they show Mario Kart, Nintendo's guide stuff is just marketing. If they want to do something dumb like include NSMB or omit SMG2 in a pamphlet it doesn't really mean anything.

Weirdly, they retroactively included Super Mario Land in that Direct, though Land 2 is still absent for some reason. But yes, Galaxy 2 is now not considered, hilariously.

I would say they just didn’t include direct sequels, but they included Lost Levels of all things. Lost Levels is more important than Galaxy 2 and Land 2.

Super Mario Run
Super Mario Run kicks mega ass and it's a damn shame it got such bad reception. I've been a Mario fan since SMB and it's one of my favorites. I've been shackled to my phone a lot recently and it's basically the perfect phone game. Although gathering toads for the end game city builder shit that doesn't actually matter at all is really stupid. Actually, toad rally is just kind of stupid in general.

"My opinion Trump's Nintendo's."

Well, can't argue with that now, can we? Want to tell us what the real official Zelda timeline is while you're at it? :story:

I don't really care what they say either though honestly, Super Mario Land 2 definitely counts, and I don't see why Galaxy 2 shouldn't either.

Are the Toads required to unlock any stages? I hate when stages are locked behind annoying, mandatory collectibles, which is why I never actually finished Super Princess Peach. It'd be in my top 5 Mario games if it wasn't for that. Actually, it's so good it probably still is.

You're doing the exact same thing I am. But then you're also the same person who says that the US translation of PMTYD has precedence over the Japanese one because muh trannies.

The only things of note that the toads unlock are Luigi and Yoshi, neither of whom I ever use. It's also a very reasonable number that you'll get after playing like five toad rallies. You can keep going to unlock recolors like all the Yoshi colors and Toadette, but those are purely for bragging rights.

Toad rally is kind of fun for a little while, and you'll probably unlock everything that matters before you get bored of it. But remix 10 is way better. Not that you have to choose, really. You get so many goddamn toad tickets you'll be begging the game to stop giving them to you.

Your total number of toads also increases your kingdom level, but I honestly don't even remember what that does. I know it doesn't unlock levels or characters. I think it's just more buildings.

I don't really buy phone games, so I've only played the first four levels. I wish they'd put it in the Switch e-shop for $20 and let you play it with the touch screen in handheld mode.

It doesn't matter. People weren't looking at NSMBU in their Amazon Cart and going, "Actually, I'm not going to buy this because it isn't cannon."

Look, if you look at the top-25 best selling Nintendo games of all time, three of them are Wii U releases that got ports to Switch, (BOTW, Mario Kart 8 and NSMBU) and four of them are games developed wholly for Switch. To act like the general public had no appetite for the first party games on Wii U is gob smackingly retarded.

It might be a controversial opinion, but I think the Wii was an anomaly because it became a fad and the general public just hasn't had any appetite for a Nintendo home console for several decades now. People want to be able to take the kinds of games Nintendo makes on the go with them, which is why their handhelds, including the Switch, have all been incredibly successful. The 3DS did well despite being on the market the same time as the the Wii U because Nintendo's audience wants handhelds and so Wii U was marketed to an audience that didn't exist.

Well we finally got some good news in regards to seeing Switch 2 cartridges with different amounts of storage space: Macronix, the Taiwanese company responsible for manufacturing Switch 2 game cartridges, confirmed via their quarterly earnings report (FYI: the article is in Traditional Chinese so you'll need to translate it) that they'll start to use MLC NAND and 3D NAND to meet varying capacity needs.

Earlier this morning, Nintendo posted a survey in the US about game key cards, so this is your chance to tell them how you feel about- aaaaand it’s gone.

It’s gone, the survey is gone.

If we're being technical Nintendo sent this survey to small group of customers on Sunday and the link to said survey was shared to social media pretty quickly. I managed to get a completed one in fairly quickly (since I was on the bus with nothing to do) and pointed out how shitty Game Key cards are in terms of media ownership, game preservation, and data management.

As far as Nintendo closing the survey is concerned they either met their internal quota or the survey was never meant to leave the small group of people that they initially shared it with.

Fair enough, I just don't consider it part of the main series because it's less of a traditional platformer than all the others, and because I'm not used to the idea of phone games being part of the main series.

Told everyone it would only take a matter of time to get other cart sizes. And the issue at first was always everyone else being lazy.

The main problem IMO is that they need smaller sizes. The Switch had 8/16/32/64(?) GB so publishers had plenty of options. With 64 as the new minimum, publishers are forced to either pay a premium for a giant cartridge or use a game key card as a “solution” to the problem that Nintendo caused. Tiny games like Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S could easily fit on an 8GB card, but publishers simply don’t have that option anymore.

And to make things worse: Because the publisher is going to use a game key card anyway, there’s no longer an incentive for devs to keep file sizes low so they can save costs by dropping down to a smaller cartridge. That means games are larger regardless of purchase method, which means they take up more space and leave less room for other games, ironically making game key cards worse than they would be if they were simply a niche option for a small outlier of massive games.

A small game could probably just release as a Switch 1 game I suppose, but eventually that option will be phased out.
