Difference is, Disney has been hit hard enough to notice it. They want to bring back the men that they chased away. We will see what happens with Nintendo.
In fairness, Disney never did well with men. Its why they bought Marvel and Star Wars and made 3 fucking Cars movies (like the only brand they made boys like). I think Nintendo's struggle is going to be the fact the market, overall, is down and there is going to have to be a big shift towards Millenials as Zoomers don't have the same capital to buy games and kids are all playing Fortnite, Minecraft or Roblox. Nintendo desperately wants the kid/family market but it doesn't look like its feasible without some major shift in what they make and how they do business.

They never did as well as boy-specific brands but they had brands that appealed to boys specifically. Mainly TV stuff. Kim Possible, Recess, and a whole lot more stuff too. But their Princess line was their flagship and that did not appeal to men. They had stuff that did though. Still, people of all demographics went to their movies, even men. A Disney movie was an event, after all.

I think a wait and see approach is in order. Thinks rarely go the way we think.

Both brands issue is being a "child brand for manchildren". Out of greed they abandoned the child demographic and sell packaged nostalgia in premium price. Guess it makes sense in negative birth rate Japan, but it's stupid long term.

Disney in the 90's had massive boy demographic with amazing films for them. Then they pissed it all away due to inter-company jealousy.

Exactly. Even in later years they had stuff like Phineas and Ferb, Gravity Falls and more. They had stuff boys and men like. They told the audience they hated them and now suffer.

The PS5 was scalped because people wanted it (for some unknown reason). If the Switch 2 was as in demand as the PS5 it would be scalped just as badly.
That’s why I included the “partially fueled” part in my reply, you also have to factor in the pandemic’s effect in regard to how the PS5 was sold (as mentioned in some of the articles that @Fox Girl Enjoyer linked) and how it was manufactured.

In the Switch 2’s case Nintendo learned from last gen’s console launches and made sure the was ample supply with mass production began between September and November while retailers had various restrictions to limit scalping (usually in the form of a one-per-person limit and tracking preorders across their systems, Nintendo’s online store had the most restrictive one in the form of requiring an NSO account that has had at least one year of active service and 50 hours of play time for an invite). You still had issues with stores overselling their initial stock and stores selling out the minute they’d get a restock but that’s cooled down in many areas.
If you want to see something crazy, go look at PS5 software sales and compare them to other systems. Its worse than the PS4 or even the fucking Gamecube. People aren't buying games on Playstation anymore. They basically buy it to play some GAAS game like Fortnite, Apex or Mihoyo games or they play sports games. This is why everyone is moving to PC because console software sales are in the gutter. Sony got lazy this generation. It will be interesting to see Switch 2's software sales, especially for games outside the bundle because I expect Nintendo will have a similar problem. Raising the price of games has been a disaster for the industry as a whole.
If were being honest here I rarely fire up my PS5 anymore, I have a majority of the non-Nintendo games I used to play on it on my PC (with the only exception being Astro Boy).

I would argue Nintendo absolutely wants the child demographic but they aren't buying Nintendo products. I've mentioned it before, but they try to be a lot like Mincraft in a lot of ways. Tears of the Kingdom was all about building vehicles. DK Bananza is all about destroying the environment. The playtest game they have kept under wraps IS Minecraft. Then you have stuff like Hey Mario which is trying to appeal to kids and families.

The problem is, especially for Nintendo, is the gaming demographics are skewing upward. A report game out not too long ago that 18-24 year olds have basically stopped spending on games. This would pretty much be the Gen Z audience and it means that its going to be harder and harder to get a new demographic of gamers on Nintendo's platform. Nintendo, and a lot of game companies for that matter, will have to pander more to Millennials because their spending has, at least, been flat. However, the games they want are not the games Nintendo wants to make. Rather than make "X but better" they are trying to make these experimental projects that take way longer and are ultimately aimed at trying to get the Minecraft/Roblox generation into Nintendo. Those generations didn't grow up with the era of consoles like millennials did, so they aren't going to be gung ho about jumping into Nintendo's walled garden. They grew up on phones, PCs and whatever else had the games they wanted. They probably don't even give a shit about any Nintendo IP.

I think what you noted is the result of this conundrum and not Nintendo's actual goal. They want "the whole family" but they can only reach millennial manchildren because those are the only people who will spend the money to get IPs they grew up with and Nintendo is unable to make something that would grab their attention. I wonder if its the same for Disney too.

and kids are all playing Fortnite, Minecraft or Roblox.
Don't those three already have their own issues with being "kid-friendly" or something? Because the only thing that they have in common is that they're relying on community-generated content; and aside from Epic being overzealous with Fortnite, there's absolutely an massive fucking problem that's been going on for over an decade

The main issue is that there is nothing more lame than what your dad has been into 20 years ago. Disney has been popular for being a brand, they made new shit that interested children. At least until they gave up and decided to just make sequels forever, not realising that just by the parents liking them, most children wouldn't care.

Maybe that was the genius of the prequel trilogy, it was in no way "Dad's Star Wars".

On topic, Nintendo just makes the same games for 30 years now, they cannot be lamer. Children would rather play Genshin.

The OT re-release was only a few years prior, was a huge hit with all ages and was approximately 20 years after the original releases.

At their current prices, game prices, and peripheral prices, bing bing wahoo is basically a ""luxury item"" to those who live paycheck to paycheck.
Tears of the Kingdom was all about building vehicles.
Don't even get me started on the sloppy seconds. It's quite an accomplishment to reboot Zelda, then basically throw out what little BOTW established for even sillier lore. At least the old games had a competent through line between the best ones.

No matter the reason, the industry being less exclusive based is a net good.
True for the end consumer, as a business decision it's pants-on-head retarded.

Very true, it's a looming dilemma whose effects will be felt sooner than one might think. I don't envy Nintendo's position in that regard as it doesn't seem to be an easy thing to rectify.

Before proceeding to run the former into the ground and utterly destroying the latter, truly Disney is getting what it deserves.

As far as console manufacturers go, they are in the best position amongst their peer with the exception of Valve. MS is at the bottom and Sony is slightly above it.

Giving the company to the weather man is like giving it to the muffin man. Worse even, the muffin man at least has sales experience and would not alter good products into something unrecognizable.

Children still like Mario. Just not as much as Minecraft, Fortnight and Roblox. A lot of kids play Mario Kart with their parents.

Some titles that are popular with Nintendo fans like Zelda and Metroid have actually historically not been that huge with the general public. On SNES, for example A link to the Past sold ~ 4 million units. Compare that to Mario All Stars which sold over 10 million, DKC which sold over 9 million, Super Mario Kart which sold almost 9 million. Not one Zelda game broke ten million units until the Switch came out. That's not to say the series has never been popular, just that it has never been the blockbuster series Mario is.

Maybe it's because most people don't like thinking beyond a certain point during their downtime? For some reason, most of the popular shit tends to be some of the easiest ones that are available

Fair point there.

Mario's just bing-bing wahoo easy pick up and play to kill some time regardless of which world you last left of, while Zelda and Metroid require you to remember where you last left off so you don't waste time wandering around in area's you already explored, so if you take a super-long break from exploration-based games that don't readily have a 'go here for next main objective'-reminder available, you're just going to get frustrated.

I have a strong suspicion that come the Fall/Winter season, Donkey Kong Bonanza will go down as probably Game Of The Year. I just keep sensing that more people would rather play that than Mario Kart World.

Have they substantially fixed any of the gripes people have had about MK World yet, or is that momentum just gone and people have moved on to, well, Bonanza now that I think about it?
