You update the image that's written to the cart in subsequent production runs, assuming you sell enough copies initially to justify more runs. Same as they've always done (even games as old as Super Mario Bros. 3 had this sort of thing done).

There was a video that tried to make sense of it.

Basically, the original DK is still canon, but neither Mario nor Pauline were present. Instead, Cranky kidnapped Lady - which is referenced with Pauline wearing Lady's dress - while Jumpman was the hero to save her. This is not the first time K Rool met DK, they make it pretty clear he has been out of commission for decades between himself, Cranky and Diddy. It is safe to assume Bananza takes place after all 5 DKC games. Where the timeline gets messy is with Pauline referring back to Donkey Kong in Odyssey, but it is theorized that she is actually talking about DK GameBoy (1994) and not the arcade game - even if Odyssey mostly references arcade.
Huh. They're re-retconning DK's Mario & Pauline back to Jumpman & Lady? I guess that fixes things but still raises more questions than answers.

As for King K. Rool, I don't remember them being clear about DK knowing him. And if it's been so long since Rool's been trapped and DKB takes place after the DKC games, then that would mean the game takes place decades after those games? Kinda weird.

There is no Mario timeline. There is a DK one though, and the game does seemingly fuck it up. Oh well, did you really play a DK game for the plot?
How can there be no Mario timeline if there's a DK one since they both debuted together? And DK's story isn't exactly the main thing I play them for but I still like stories to be consistent and make sense.

Nintendo also seems poised to put out a DK film (or at least give him an even bigger part in the next Mario film), because they really wanted this game to resemble a Pixar/DreamWorks/Illumination film (which is my biggest criticism). Maybe they even want to add their own name to that list eventually, making movies by themselves.

Yeah, but that sounds even worse than needing to download a patch or whatever, you gotta buy a whole new version of the game.

The DK timeline stuff was because Rare liked referencing stuff and were in charge of creating the story of the characters. Mario doesn't have one because Shigeru Miyamoto just wants them to be like Looney Tunes, where no continuity exists unless it is specifically referenced to within that game.

The idea is that people who didn't own the game beforehand now get an up-to-date version of the game when they buy a physical copy of it without needing to download the patch. People who bought the earlier version can still patch as usual. Like I said, it's been done like this for ages now.

Of course, I've seen Nintendo and Sony pull the cheeky stunt of shipping a firmware update on a physical disc or cart to force you to update your console if you want to play a game (even if you have a physical copy of it). Among other things, it's a scummy way to trick homebrewers and modders into potentially installing more "mod-proofed" firmware revisions, but that's an entirely different song and dance.

This YT guy dig more into the switch2 card speed problem, but when you see the Ubisoft employee..
Urgh, reminds me of the troon from Silence of the Lambs, what a disgusting looking freak. And this is pretty much every single game studio now. This is what happens when you celebrate mental illness and don't enforce some minimum social standards. "They/Them" tell me you are insane without telling me.

Maybe they'll finally announce an exclusive worth buying a new console for like a new Zelda or 3D Mario or Animal Crossing or something.
You have Mario Kart, DK Bananza and single-player Splatoon already. I guess I could see them announcing a big spring game (though, really, they already did, its Splatoon) but this is going to be all about giving release dates to MP4 and PZA.
If I had to guess, Animal Crossing is for next Christmas, Smash the year after that. 3D Mario somewhere in there, maybe takes Smash's spot? None of them being announced now.
