It's basically trendy shit, very few people are genuinely "nonbinary" and it's just basically genetic they feel that way. We all had a gym teacher or person in our life that was a manly woman or really girly man.

non binary lesbians make no sense to me, and absolutely no one can explain it to me beyond the concept of 'it's valid and real'. I'm fairly liberal. I'll accept like, agender people generally. This is complete bullshit is why this makes no sense to you. Basically, because butch lesbians have existed forever, they now consider all of them 'non-binary'. And since anyone under 30 is strongly, strongly encouraged to transition if they are too masculine, butch lesbians are now effectively no-existent to them and therefore no one is around to refute this nonsense. Today, if you are a butch lesbian, you're basically reviled because you're either considered a TERF for thinking masculinity doesn't make you literally male or you're mocked as a 'self-hating trans man'.
It's really insidious the way that person phrased it, if you're paying attention. They say lesbians have been "disrupting the gender norm, acting outside the gender binary and identifying as gender non-conforming throughout history..." this part is mostly true (I say mostly because butches never really 'identified' as gender non-conforming. They just 'were'. This 'identifying as' shit is a very new thing.). Yes, butch lesbians have always existed. But then they go on to say, "If you have a problem with non-binary lesbians..." and um... we weren't talking about non-binary lesbians were we? That user just described butch lesbians - who gender cultists actually really hate these days.
tl;dr gender cultists really like to take truthful aspects of gay and lesbian history and rewrite it to justify and suit their stupid ideology. It's incredible how many historical gays and lesbians they have decided are trans now that they're dead and can't refute it.

I'm well aware of all the troon threads on this forum. I also have the (mis)fortune of directly knowing some kids who've bought into this stuff. They're all teenage girls, and none of them ever have any ties to self-identified transgender people who didn't pick out their identity on Tumblr. They're attracted to it for the same reasons as any fad subculture: finding a secure identity when you feel like you have none, the illusion that you're rebelling against a society that's trying to put you down, the presence of "cool" fashion that becomes embarrassing when worn by anyone above 18 (see here), and most importantly, the ability to constantly be validated that you're so much more special than everyone else around you.
And if that sounds like a cult to you, then I've got another cult to show you...

I've been unfortunate enough to witness a case of this as well, though the individual in question would probably fit better in the mlm thread. Being a regular straight girl was apparently boring and meaningless, so she decided to become a ~~kawaii nonbinary trans gay soft boy~~ to endlessly reblog "aesthetic" posts featuring mostly black teenage boys with flowers in their hair and standard Tumblr whining about The Straights™.

I've seen some college students into it, but I tend to assume they just haven't grown out of it. (A college freshman I met was in for a nasty surprise when she found out half the local LGBT club thought her nonbinary lesbian identity was utter BS.) The few 25+ cases I know about tend to be either bitter spinsters or weird arrested development cases, not really worth anyone's time tbh.

"identifying as gender non-conforming". Wait. Is "gender non-conforming" a gender in itself? I assumed it was just a longwinded way of saying that you're not stereotypically masculine or feminine. AKA you don't conform completely to those gosh dang gender roles. Which would be the opposite of trans, in that you're saying "Yeah I don't conform, I'm not that feminine, but that doesn't stop me being a woman".
Seems that the only people left who have that view are the zero-effort troons who don't try and look at all feminine but still want to date lesbians.
Every time I think I understand this non-binary shit it gets more retarded.

My best guess is that many don't understand it anymore either. "Identifying as gender non-conforming" could be a way to express their totally speshul gender without having it to adjust it to the newest flavor of the week. The hottest, best and most oppressed gender changes every couple of days and in order to keep your membership of the cool kids circle, you are not allowed to identify as anything less (like being bi or gay ways the shit a few years ago, nowadays you have to be at least trans, non-binary, otherkin and severely disabled at the same time). I can imagine that a lot of less-devoted tumblr idiots don't know what the flavor of the week is, so they use vague phrases.

Honestly if these people stop getting attention from the general population for being "nonbinary" the trend will die out.. Well, apart from those who actually have been diagnosed with Gender Identity Disorder (GID) by a professional, and are actually transgender.

David Bowie, I should've clarified. And they hate him because he had consensual--if drug-addled--sex with 15-year-old Lori Mattix, a groupie in the 70s. Not saying that's great for obvious reasons, but rock stars have gotten up to worse shit. Following Bowie's death, the victim was very vocal in saying she loved it; she co-wrote an article about it if you're interested.
