You're probably right about the whole teenager being uncomfortable with their changing bodies. Puberty sucks for a lot of people, and unfortunately they learned their 'coping' skills through a social network that is laser focused on identity politics and hypersensitive about micro aggression from dominant social and cultural groups.Because these are kids who sit there and go, "I'm definitely trans because, as a 16 year old, I am uncomfortable with my body sometimes. According to tumblr, that makes me trans. But I don't want to be a gross male oppressor, so I'll be something cute instead! Why not make my gender reflect my personality? I'll be cloudgender!"

This, this, this. I've actually asked genderfluid/nonbinary people to explain their gender identity, and every time it just boils down to gender roles. Today I feel like doing <insert stereotypically girly thing> but yesterday I was <insert stereotypically manly activity>.These people confuse gender with personality/hobbies. That's why they claim gender is fluid. Because they like wearing a dress today and pants the next day. Instead of realizing that emotions/feelings change and thus they are normal human beings - it's some innate fluid gender identity and they are oppressed victims of the cistriarchy.
It's also really just a big extension of the "not like other girls" mentality.
It's all tied into adolescent insecurity and the struggle to find an identity, and overcompensating as a result.
It's so easy to get T in the US. I'm not saying it's better in the uk, but here (on the nhs, I don't know about private healthcare) you're on a waiting list for months just to get an appointment. Means fewer people actually do lasting damage to themselves during their edgy phase. But now - thanks to informed consent clinics (a quick and easy way to obtain hormones) - they might regret this "adolescent insecurity".
Take tumblr for example: there is a tag called mlm (men loving men) on tumblr and it's full of girls and young women who claim to be gay men. There are literally no actual gay men there. Just girls who fantasize about yaoi/slash etc. Many of them are already on testosterone.
There isn't enough 'ugh' in the world for that tag. They took all the uwu positive mental-illness enabler messages and all the genderspecial messages and mashed them together to make a truly exceptional bunch of horseshit. But now - thanks to informed consent clinics (a quick and easy way to obtain hormones) - they might regret this "adolescent insecurity".

The best part about being an enby is that you can not put any effort into looking androgynous or genderless or whatever, and then you get to reap the oppression points from getting misgendered.

I'm pretty sure a large swathe of Tumblr users think drag is ~transphobic~ for bullshit reasons.I feel like there'd be so much less genderfuckery on Tumblr if these girls knew that drag kings were a thing.

Bingo. Drag queens were banned at a Glasgow pride event "in case they're offensive to trans people."I'm pretty sure a large swathe of Tumblr users think drag is ~transphobic~ for bullshit reasons.
I think Tumblr is extremely damaging for teen girls who are tomboys or gender nonconforming, who are already insecure and don't fit in with regular highschool girls. Because on Tumblr not liking to wear dresses or not acting 'girly' means you're trans or nonbinary uwu. They get sucked in, go on hormones without having actual dysphoria and damaging themselves beyond believe. Nowadays it's not about 'It's ok to be yourself' but 'If you're different you're x label!'
...I wish I could rate this feels AND agree.
I still have no idea how this ideology got started, as in how we went from "labels aren't necessary" to "MY LABELS ARE EVERYTHING TO ME AND IF YOU MIS-LABEL ME YOU'RE A SHITLORD."

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it was due to the feminism upswing that happened around 2013-ish. Since everyone was now a feminist, you couldn't say "I'm not like other girls" because that's girlhate, and girlhate is the most damaging thing. So you had to find other ways to say "I'm not like other girls." The best solution? To not be a girl.
