https://youtube.com/watch?v=QXwVX6I9D04I would unironically love to go to North Korea, just to experience what it's like to be in a real surveillance/police state. Whoever took this candid video is very brave.
Agreed. If I could somehow visit the *real* North Korea without a bunch of handlers, it'd be kinda fascinating. In the same way visiting Chernobyl would fascinating, it's tragic.... but interesting at the same time.

Would love to go there but could never get to see the society free of handlers or being immediately pegged as an outsider and treated differently.

The Pulgasari toy is pretty cool and colourful.

They also made an unbelievably gorgeous cartoon about squirrel soldiers.

And they made another pretty cute one about a bear, which was an Italian coproduction:

Lol this animation style looks so familiar. Back in the 90s and early 2000s, some entertainment companies in my country would produce bootleg cartoons by outsourcing the animation to Best Korea. Simba the king lion, better known as "the italian lion king ripoff", is an infamous example of this.
Pretty sure I might have seen some of that shit on TV in the earliest 2000s.

My favorite scene in that cartoon.

Much better than any of the shit made here today. Would much rather show kids Squirrel and Hedgehog then say Steven Universe.

This is by far the most thorough documentary I've seen on the pulgasari kidnappings. It even contains secret recordings of Kim Jong Il being completely candid. Might be the best insight into the North Korean leadership we'll ever have.

That looks like the cartoon from Klauses childhood on American dad, fucking commies always brain wash kids as young as possible apparently. Also for those wishing to goto North Korea you technically can like Otto Wernburger or whatever his name was, but its a very regulated trip and as a American you will probably end up on death row for "trying to steal a motivational poster thus attempting to overthrow the gov't by demotivating the population" or something equally as insane. But if you go make sure to post pics of the 1964 American "warship" they stole from international waters and have turned into a AntiAmerican shrine to this very day

I am a big fan of NK-pop legitimately (Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble/Wangjaesan Light Music Band etc.) Music from North Korea has a unique sound you can't find anywhere else. It's propaganda certainly, but it is also kino. The way I would describe it is synth/digital instrument overuse, with heavy inspiration from Soviet style anthems and music at the time the USSR was most culturally and politically relevant to NK, with the unique influence of Juche ideology/North Korean culture.

North Korea is the #1 country I would visit if it was safe and ethical to do so. It's so profoundly interesting to me, there isn't anywhere else like it in the world. But I know going there as a disaster tourist supports the Kim regime and the suffering of the millions of people that got the shit luck of being born in North Korea.

Admittedly it is probably safe as long as you aren't stupid, get drunk, and steal a poster on CCTV footage like Otto Warmbier did. Actual North Koreans get executed or 3 generations in labor camps for what Warmbier did, and we still got his comatose body out. I think many Americans have an invulnerability complex when they visit other countries that don't like us and are champing at the bit to make an example of spoiled western pigdog.
