Not-E3 2024 Thread - A place to discuss the whole week's worth of video game broadcasts and announcement

Also, maybe I missed it earlier in the thread, but what's with this trend of turning fantasy settings into quirky ironic quip fests?

It's the Marvel effect. For some fucking reason, everyone has to make dumb ass generic Spider-Man quips during fights, because that's what the retards like. It's fucking dumb. They turned Transformers into a Marvel movie, and everything with "quirky" / "ironic" humor now has to be this shit tier writing that only a retard on Meth would find enjoyable.

It's the Marvel effect.
Some day I should get around to watching Buffy, because that was ground zero for all of this. It was supposedly great and a breath of fresh air, but no one knew it would start a 30 year trend.

What I don't get about it is, if they want Marvel, watch Marvel. I don't see why every genre has to be homogenized into ironic hipster garbage. It's like how 2016-2020 every bit of media had a Trump stand in. Even a Robin Hood movie at the time had current year racial nonsense and antifa references.

Is it just me, or is every single vidya presentation chock full of "quirky" indie titles with cartoony graphics you'll never see again?
They aren't even indie.

Indie = independent, but people didn't like that definition as it didn't filter out companies like Valve and Nintendo, so indie = small team and low budget. But now these "indie" games have AAA publisher backing and teams of 20-30 people. For context, Rare games on N64 had teams of 12-20 and took about a year or two to make.

I usually don't watch these but I had a pretty good time watching the Microsoft one, 85% goyslop 15% stuff I was actually slightly interested in, which is 15% better than a lot of these AAA showcases I've seen!

I feel horrible for Fable fans though : ( I never played them but the first one looked pretty good

Fable fans are feasting compared to the absolute hell that Dragon Age fans are about to endure.

I didn’t realize MachineGames was making the Indiana Jones game. They really do only make games where you fights Nazis. (And one good DLC campaign for Quake)

I hope the Indiana game bombs like the movie. I’m so tired of Disney slop.

Every console game will bomb from here on out. Microsoft and Sony wrote cheques that their arse can't cash.
Each game has to sell multiple millions just to make its money back and that's every game. Xbox games are free on gamepass and no-one buys sony slop.

I feel like a gaming market crash (At least all the AAA games) is inevitable at this point. There's absolutely zero quality assurance in the scene rn and games are just getting more and more expensive with more and more diminishing returns.

Indie games will probably still exist like everything else but maybe a lot of the grifters who just wanna make a quick buck will leave the scene out of fear once the big devs go away.

Better question is, how long do you guys think it'll take? I think we're like one console generation away so maybe another 6-7 years of this hell.

Definitely rainbow, but I do hope once it crashes devs start giving a shit about QA, but knowing how the modern world is in general, not just gaming, likely not. Best case scenario is gaming becomes a niche hobby again that normies don't give a fuck about

I'm of the opinion that we're already in a crash. I won't beat that dead horse, but in short, mass layoffs, ESG money drying up, games being dumped in goodwill and discount resellers.

But in terms of consoles, what even are generations at this point? With every company chasing the iPhone model of incremental updates, and diminishing returns on the technical front, we might not even get another generation. I can see it going two ways. The first is the handheld model, where companies build generic consoles around a standard spec like the Steam Deck and Switch. The second is a full wipe and a return to Nintendo style consoles with physical media and plug-n-play convenience. Obviously, I see the former as more likely. I don't see the model of consoles as normie PCs lasting.

That sounds like a monkeys paw wish.

The future of gaming as a niche hobby has already been shown. It's Pico 8 and VR, both of which are hated by most gamers. "There are no VR games" they cry, and when presented with a list of games, each one "doesn't count" because it's not a AAA franchise. That's what happens when AAA goes away. You're left with indies.

The crash depends on two things; how much slop is a game-addicted normie willing to buy and how retarded are the companies going to be? In the case of the former, if niggercattle will buy absolutely any shite just to get their hit, then there will be no crash. In the case of the latter, if the companies keep throwing money away at shite games nobody wants to buy, then there will be a crash.

Hopefully normies find another form of entertainment and companies keep making 100 bajillion dollar crapfests that sink companies.

Consoles need to stop where they are and focus on affordability. 4k isn't needed, neither is RT, not in a console. High end PC with 4k/ray tracing smashing 240fps, sure. Consoles doing that shit? Hell the fuck no. I won't pay the price for a console that only has slop. These fuckers want £499 for a PS5 3 years into the gen? When I can play all of their games on a PC? Fuck these dumb cunts.

Nintendo hasn't went yet but otherwise I guess they did, since nobody else even showed up. What a shitty win though. Even the "2024" games don't have dates, and then all the big stuff is 2025. Wooooooooow.
Sure, but Xbox really needed a win. Can't wait for Nintendo's which might be next week.

The problem they're running into is that differences aren't allowed any more. Consoles have never been more homogeneous, but at the same time companies have been nerfing their games since at least the PS4, so that people who play on PS3 don't feel like they're getting a lesser version. Cue $150 collectors editions. Even the minor differences of GC-PS2-Xbox aren't allowed.

I keep hearing that, but it's hard to judge. On the one hand, seeing people claim Indiana Jones is going to fix Indiana Jones, I see the black pill. But as games like Suicide Squad, and the collapse of the entire Star Wars and Marvel movie franchises prove, there isn't enough cattle to keep things going forever.
