OFF - A nice game for cute children

Fellas, with a face like this, I might not have high hopes for this project
Ps. This is the guy that mistranslated a crucial line (fucking up fan theories for years) and then added pronouns to the 3rd version and may have fucked shit up even harder as lots of dialogue is noticeably different.

What the fuck did they do to this game in the rerelease it looks like it's made for faggots now

"nice game for cute children" was clearly a joke for the original with how it was quite apparent the game world was dark and unsettling from the start. Now it's got Toby Fox music with Bonetrousle motifs and cute crayon brush promo art, we're so heckin quirky until DARK STUFF happens!

Has anyone actually played the off remake demo? There was a mini controversy a month ago about the new dedan's theme, which less dedan's theme and more like Toby unironically make it a papyrus theme remix becuase it features the benotrousle motif and it's impossible to ignore it.

I don't know if Toby did it as "cute reference" but some people rightfulyl thought it was kinda fucked up that toby couldn't just replace the old composer, he had to piss on both his work and OFF by literally inject his own undertale motifs on it. Not to mention it's kinda immersion breaking ya know? Cause you're fighting Dedan who is this, you know, serious threatning enemy... and now you're hearing papyrus theme...

Mortis eventually explained on tumblr you gotta give the composer freedom but dedan's theme is controversial and will most likely change.

Actually what the FUCK was Toby thinking in adding his own shit to this?? You'd think a game with its own identity and uniqueness would, idk, have its own themes? Even if it needed to be changed due to copyright, I don't know how adding Papyrus' theme to this is in anyway a "tribute" and instead comes off (lol) as a spit in the face of what the original work had going. Actual fucking L move on his part, jesus christ...

I really wanted to give Toby the benefit of the doubt when he talked about giving Pepper Steak respect and seeing his work as "fan music". I expected a one-off easter egg kind of thing, but that's way too much Papyrus for any song, let alone the Dedan fight which obviously is supposed to have a totally different mood from Papyrus. Best case scenario is we get the Sonic movie treatment where they backtrack to something more appropriate and hold back on the Undertale going forward, but I doubt that'll happen.

I believe the idea is that Dedan directly inspired Papyrus, hence the theme. Problem is that Undertale was very big and Papyrus is a joke, and most of the people interested in OFF probably are at least aware of Undertale. If it was at least subtle I'd be more forgiving, but its very upfront through a good chunk of the song. Its very distracting though, but probably reflects worse on Mortis that he greenlit it, he's probably just cashing in. Do hope there's a mod to bring back the original soundtrack though. How was the rest of the demo?

The motif is way too noticeable and it's a bad sign all the positive comments about the song included I CLAPPED BECAUSE I HEARD BONETROUSLE. He points out the original will always be free which is all well and good but he comes off like a sellout who turned his game into an indie dev circlejerk playground for a quick buck.

Forgot to note Toby has added motifs from his other songs into Pokemon in a way less distracting and self aggrandizing way so he just wanted to wave his dick around this time because it's OFF.

I used "cute reference" in quotes cause i believe the joke is that papyrus design is allegedly inspired by Dedan, so Toby thought putting papyrus theme would be really wholesome and respectful. But OFF is a fucking obscure unkwnown game so injecting his trademark leitmotifs over it feels like punching down.

Toby also said that composing the new pepper steak is like "breaking into Coldwood's house and plastering my face on his pictures", so i don't know why he would do Fake Orchestra like this.

Yeah, i know the ference and that's the thing, the entire song and Dedan gets reduced to "omg papyrus reference".

Idk much about mortis but looking at his tumblr post, Mortis saying he gave the composers freedom so the new version is "surprising and interesting" makes me think he's either scared or too trustful of Toby to give him any real input here. He says Toby does "no final decision making power" but also that he's too afraid and pressured, so it sounds like he would just allow him to do anything so Toby doesn't feel bad about it.

Afterall, if you get Toby Fox to compose your entire game, are you really going to tell him what to do? If the soundtrack really has the "starts quirky but gets darker as the game ends" rule (that UT fans keep using as shield without getting it's not how OFF works) then you know it was Toby's idea.

Another thing he mentions is that he replaced dopefish for Toby's Dogsona, which is... not helping Mortis case.

(the borders having modern mordis art that clash with the game sprites and artstyle is surely something)

The demo is free on steam btw, i think it has the first zone, i might play later and post some screenshots here but i havent played OFF in over a decade to compare. Some complaints include the borders and modern UI not matching the game but combat is allegedly better and require some effort now.

I just gave it a listen. Bonetrousle is one thing but is no-one going to talk about the fucking Irate Gamer theme? I genuinely got confused and thought that I'd clicked on a Siivagunner fan video.

Fuck. Learn french and play the original at this point.
If this is the same gendie that made the V3 translation, I agree. Even other gendershits said his reason for making the third version was making it about himself (he had stated he did it to "show how much he's grown" as if that's relevant to a game about a baseball batter beating the shit out of ghosts) rather than wanting to just fix the mistranslation about the Queen and the Batter's relationship to Hugo, where it made it seem like the Batter was the Queen's husband, with the bit about "our child".

ETA: It is the same tranny. Wonderful.

Probably because Pepper Steak is the most popular, so its treated with reverence, while the rest of the soundtrack can get replaced by Undertale-lite.

Honestly the part I'm surprised about is that there's even pushback, since so many people seemed to be fans of Toby.

It's Peper Steak.

It is a cult hit that cultivated a niche fanbase even if composed of undertroons they respect OFF as an artistic work of art and clearly this demake port is just being made for money instead of being a free game released to steam similar to Yume Nikki, like people wanted. It's going to be yet another LISA shitshow where the real fans are separated by the tourists and are implored to check out the original work.

I seriously have no idea why Toby thought it was a good idea to add what's pretty much a more epic version of Bonetrousle as a boss theme especially after he said he supposedly had "a lot of respect for OFF" and wanted to at least try to do the original soundtrack justice. I get how one of his characters is inspired by Dedan but you just can't retroactively add a reference to your own character like this to an official remake, like c'mon man. Most of the people who are going to play this remake will probably do so because it partly inspired Undertale and has Toby's name on it so I guess it doesn't matter much in the end but as someone who played the original long ago and liked it a lot I can't deny this makes me MATI quite a bit. (Plus I just don't think Toby's musical style fits the game at all)

Personally I pretty much wrote this remake/remaster off as soon as I saw they were going to replace most of (all of?) the tracks, and I'm guessing a lot of others did too. The original tracks just added so much to this game's atmosphere and there's no way anything else could be a good replacement for them with how unique and fitting ACC's tracks were, but with how many uncleared samples ACC used it was pretty much inevitable. Same thing happened to the LISA remaster but at least there it was only one track, which became objectively worse as a result.

The only person who would've been fit to do the soundtrack for this remaster is ACC himself but from the little bit of knowledge I have of him I doubt he would've been okay with that, plus it seems like he pretty much disappeared from the Internet altogether and from what I've heard Mortis and him don't really talk anymore. Hope he's doing well though.

Nah this kills it.

You can make an excuse that the composer didn't want to compose new stuff or whatever, fine. But adding that stupid dog for no reason is just standard troonlike parasitism.
