Food and shelter are also required for life. Should the government be required to pay for everyone's food and rent?

Right next to "life" is listed "the pursuit of happiness." Filipino schoolboys make me happy, so should the government be required to provide me with Filipino schoolboys?

You can cry "reductio ad absurdum" but a line needs to be drawn somewhere. I'm for drawing the line at a point that doesn't involve reducing my choice, increasing my taxes, and reducing the rights of others..

right to life and liberty means you have a right to not be fucking murdered or enslaved, ESPECIALLY by the state, not that you have a right to steal and rob the things you want from other people

special attention should be paid to how these rights are defined primarily against the state. at the time the constitution was written, this was a pretty radical thing to do, because in other countries at the time, the population didn't actually have a right to life or liberty like that - they were subjects, their sovereign (king or emperor) could seize their property or order them killed at will, no questions asked. that is the background against which the concept of inalienable rights was created.

(also a good ~99% of health care has fuck all to do with keeping people alive, most of it is merely a matter of convenience and small improvements to overall well-being)

Say it with me now, you can't have a right to other peoples goods and services.

If you have a right to them, inherently those people are your slaves and they have no rights to their own body or labor.

The right to life you're referencing just means that others (especially government) can't just decide to end your life out of nowhere. It, in no way shape or form forces anyone else or the government to provide for your life. *you* are responsible for that.
