Agree, but kicking a 13 yo from your home isn't discipline. And in this case, she was lumping the kid in with her frustration with her husband.

I agree that this was a bit of a nuclear option but at least in her telling it sounds like the kid got the message, and without the husband around to undermine her the son now has the chance to learn to act right and respect the women in his life.

...And just generally to do as required by his parent. It may be that that kid was following an anti-woman direction, but that seems a bit of a stretch. Better to site it as a "house citizen obligations" thing than make it a"you don't respect women" thing. She just seemed to be applying a level of maturity and negative motivation to a kid that wasn't warranted.

Probably fair to assume the names are pseudonyms, but it's not like "Rachel" and "Tim" are highly specific given the lack of other identifying information.

At 13 kids show their character it just gets worse and more pronounced as they age especially when they have learned to play people against each other and making others to do their jobs unless they face severe consenquences and even then they might not change .

Its not cutting off for not doing chores its cutting off for playing off parents against eachother and getting around punishments by crying to dad and then trying to load off chores on his sister read the fucking story. It screams future leech and being dumped in the gutter the minute you are useful btw she didn't cut him off just give him a taste of his medicine by spending some time with slob in chief alone and also it would be far easier for her to hand him off to his father . She is not the only parent and its time men to pick up child rearing too i dont think is too complex to care for his 13 year old son. He can always visit on the weekends after all .

I mostly agree with your more even-keeled take, but I do think the fact that the daughter is following the rules of the house, and that the husband is apparently not targeting her for undermining the mother (even though teenage girls often clash with their mothers, and this woman's seeming volatility would certainly invite that), suggests at least a bit of a "women's work" angle to his perception of the appropriate roles in this household, and that the son has internalized that.

It is the adults who are playing people off of one another. And adults - 41, 38 - are far more capable and accountable than a kid barely in his teens.

And for a 13 yo kid, "go live in a motel; I'll talk to you in the new year" (her description of her initial stance) is exactly "cutting him off.". It is a withdrawal of love, of home, of mom.

However, she should be dealing with him as a peer-adult on these things...and if they have fundamentally incompatible views of household roles, taking action on the marriage...not using kids as a weapon.

I've gone back and forth internally on whether I think she was too harsh with her son. I appreciate that sometimes harsh lessons can be effective, even if that's not the approach I personally took as a parent. So I am not totally scandalized that she sent the kid off with his dad. But overall, I do think she acted out of misplaced frustration and that her son shouldn't be lumped, at 13, into being an irredeemably uncontrollable, misogynistic ass, regardless of his father's views or actions.

If this is real it's probably the pressure to keep the house festive and hospitable for guests and family that got the mother reacting in this way. If you have ever been to a large family gathering, there is a chance that after the fun part the guys (the older ones most likely) will slowly gravitate towards the couch and living room to leave the women to do the clean up. It is quite possible that it has been happening to her and her daughter, where the dad and son quietly shuffles away from the mess after eating or playing. From the guest incident it is clear that the husband does not take her words seriously. If you live at your family's place, and one of them calls to ask you clean shit up because guests are coming, at the very least you would move the obvious messes out of the way. It's possible it has gotten to the point where she believe if she does not kick the son out too with the husband, then the boy would just wait until dad comes back so he could slack again.

Did they mentioned removing zoning laws and allowing people to build their own houses? Because right now the biggest factor of poverty is literally your housing situation you can live nicely on shit minimum wage job if you have a your own house especially if you share it with a partner. Literally what kills marriage formation and having kids is the couple working their ass off up til their late 30s to pay off the house or save up to buy a house. And majority of problems stem from building codes and zoning. You can literally build a cob house with all the structural engineering included for 50k for family of 4 but if you add land in right zoning and all the building permits it can cost triple almost i remember one guy tried it just permits and testings were like 60k and all added features to make it up to code added another 50-60k for the house.
