Anyway, I was looking at a tiktok video (don't judge me, just stay with me for a moment) and it was about a woman who was secretly hiding away money to eventually leave her abusive husband. And in the comments, I saw many people saying very similar things. Their grandmothers had a stash of money "just in case". Some people were holding money for friends when they needed it. Some folks had their own stashes. And many folks were saying that even in a loving relationship, you should have a stash of money just in case.

When I read these things, I was immensely worried, frightened, and confused. Worried about the safety of those people. Frightened at how common this apparently was. And then also confused as to why someone would marry a man during this era if they believed, at any moment, the relationship would turn abusive. And then I realized as I was thinking about this that even I have a book saved for abused women that try to explain away their male partner's abusive behavior.

How is this so normalized? It's quite worrying how this is just treated this as commonplace.

There's a difference between emergency fund and a "I need to leave this relationship as best as I can and as quickly as I can because I'm fearing for the wellness and life of myself and/or my children" fund.
