Mildly uncomfortable that this notice immediately follows my comments in two threads.

I thought personality disorders were made up until I met an actual narcissist and I thought therapy was a scam until I wanted to blow my brains out and couldn't turn to anyone irl. That said, a lot of people get classified as having a personality disorder when I really don't think they do, and a lot of people are long-time users of therapy when they really just need to make some friends and touch grass.

100%. Personality disorders today are over-self- and other-diagnosed ((wtf has happened to the therapeutic/ psychiatric arts??)). It's been practically "normalized," (I mean "made to seem really common") which is unfortunate, because anyone dealing with a true personality-disordered person is not dealing with a being from this planet, at least as far as true malignant narcissists go.

I think one thing left out of casual (internet) talk about personality disorders is that there are degrees. Someone one can have narcissistic tendencies/traits but not have/be actual npd. Within actual npd, there is a continuum, ideally slotted as mild, moderate, or severe.

I've dealt with someone who I'd say falls at the lower end of severe/high end of moderate. Not devoid of humanity, but most of the "humanity" is performative, self-aggrandizing, and of course pitched to personal ends. No depth, no problem checking out of (say) parenthood or living a secret life, and scorched earth with most relationships, except where matched and where there are certain other factors not able to be legally avoided - in which case they are calculating, vicious, duplicitous, and full of absolute shit.

But they fucking crumple when you figure it out - and use it. Sadly, most people or most times people don't have the strength or commitment to the battle to call them on their bluff and continue to press beyond the minimum acceptable resolution. That's another notable thing about tangling with a malignant narcissist - they are so fucking absurd and extreme that even getting small/ medium wins is exhausting enough to ensure that most people don't care to go further - because most (normal) people are human and not sadists or otherwise blinded by desire for punishment. So even when a narc gets the "soul"*-crushing loss that causes a wound that they feel (which, btw, amps up the disfunction), they still come out OK. Never dwell on it. Best thing is to disengage asap, and if that is not possible, develop a bloodless, absolutely cold perspective and plan of action. Facts win; they depend on other people having emotions and getting fucked up from dealing with them. If you have to tangle, complete divorce from emotion plus trust in/use of facts is the only thing that wins. Confidence in any leverage, and never giving it up or indulging in their preferred mode of interaction is what will bring them to heel. They can't stand not having control. If they must be in your life, showing them you are the actual master - by action not words - will reveal them as the dogs they actually are.

You just reminded me that there's a clip going around of Jimmy Savile with Rolf Harris and a young girl. It is from some sort of television program and it's quite possibly the most uncomfortable moment in British TV.

I had assumed incorrectly those two went after boys as well but only girls. Savile had a hospital too I think? Its just awful all the girls who were abused by him.

Also I'd assume the men look like that due to mass inbreeding. Genetics are a bitch over there. Look at the royals, Diana is probably the only one who looked the least inbred.

Well, if you'd read just a bit further you'd have seen I 100% think personality disorders exist, and they are awful to be around. And though it wasn't the topic, I absolutely know that mental health and neuro-atypical conditions are real. And like any other medical condition, there are degrees of severity.
