Alien and Fargo are anomalies. There was never a wide array of movies with strong female leads. The vast majority of films have always been trash.

I’m not claiming all films were great. I’m saying that they did exist, and there were plenty of them even though the media seems to push the idea that no film ever had a good female main character, and that the modern drive for woke bollocks as the primary driver for film instead of a rollicking good plot is what makes modern films trash.
I honestly can’t think of any film I’ve seen or that’s been out in the last decade that’s not been ‘message’ driven trash, regardless of whether it had a male or female lead. The issue is putting this SJW preaching first. Modern female leads are there to put a female lead there not to have a story that needs a female lead to work, or that has a well written female character who drives the story.
Ellen Ripley is badass. The first Alien film would probably have worked with either a male or female lead. Aliens, the sequel required a female lead becasue it explores her maternal protective relationship with newt. That’s the story driving it. Look at some modern crap like Star Wars sequels and it’s just a badly written Mary Sue. There’s no meat there. No character development arc. It’s why modern media is shit. Even stuff from the forties and fifties has great female characters - the Ladykillers for example, then up to the end of the century - so many of the great British films had really good female roles. St. Trinians, and Hollywood - Born Yesterday, all about Eve, there were loads. All great well written and well acted stories.
Modern films are shit because they bash you over the head with a concept rather than telling you a story.

Well Hollywood has always been agenda driven but it did use to entertain more than preach. I think the problem is that the preaching has taken precedence over the story. Films are a way of telling stories. If the story is good, it’ll have good characters. The rest flows from the story.
There were great female leads decades back. alien, anyone? The story was good, and the design, world building, character terms etc were too - all things that flow from a story-driven film.
Nowadays the main drive of a film is The Message, which isn’t the same as the story. So female leads are written in as Mary Sue types, without a good story, and the film is shit. It’s there to preach at you not entertain you. It will always fall flat because nobody wants that.
Compare films like alien, or Fargo, with the modern crop.

I think the last really good feminist action film I saw was probably Mad Max: Fury Road.
