Can you share any details about how much RAM/CPU/HDD Matrix consumes?
I've only ever helped run smaller servers, so I have no idea how it scales, except you did tell me it's a monster (compared to XMPP/IRC)

There's no good answer. Synapse does not scale, it's python and some of the lack of optimization I've witness is shocking. The KF instance is IO bound, or memory bound, because we could compensate for IO with memory. I suspect to run a highly responsive federating matrix server of moderate size would require about 32GB of RAM and a RAID 10 of very fast NVME drives, don't forget that Synapse uses a lot of space. The CPU is not a bottleneck.
Currently Synapse uses over 160GB of DB space and 215GB of random files. It has 12GB of RAM allocated to it and it's DB.

It seems Matrix and the Fediverse are beginning to get decent adoption since the Twitter banwave in 2020 and early 2021. This is encouraging as it means likely more developers will also hitch their wagon to this caravan and maybe Dendrite(Go) or Conduit(Rust) will replace Synapse, both projects seem to be quite far along in development and seem to have 80% of the features Synapse has at the moment. Another major problem with Matrix is the utter lack of moderation and administration tools, there is a single project and its abilities are very narrow. I expect Matrix will probably begin to grow in a major fashion when the hardware costs come down, Mastodon wasn't making much progress in growing users beyond the usual techie scene but then Pleroma hit a mature point and growth is quite heavy and it seems like a few of the new instance hosts are quite involved in using their instance as a testbed to help develop Pleroma.

Ability to visually see media each user uploaded and the ability to purge them if illegal. Ability to purge media that is months/years old if it goes past a certain timeframe. Listing of IP access for each account, if one user claims another is doing death threats to them there is no way to verify such things. Truth be told, unless you actually see the infraction in real time there is very minimal amount of things you can do.

Is the server down? I can't connect; I can't choose it as home server on the main screen of element client. So no logging in. I was getting connection issues as soon as I tried opening element earlier.

The biggest problem with matrix. The official matrix.org instance is so large when trying to federate it will instantly 100% your CPU. Dendrite and Conduit are promising alternatives, and Conduit was enough for my purposes since my instance doesn't federate.
Moderation tools on matrix are fucking obtuse, all of them suck cock. Writing API requests just to do anything is disgusting for something that should be just a click on a mod panel.
Only thing that exists as of now is: https://github.com/Awesome-Technologies/synapse-admin and its horrible. Tell me why I should deploy it on a web server instead just locally have a client?

I turned sign-ups off because we had a specific individual who was engaging in a mass spam campaign and I got tired of trying to deal with it. That individual has since agreed to stop so maybe I should open up registrations again. I'll look into it, I'll probably have to add email verification requirements. For now you can make an account on like halogen.city, they're pretty chill and federate with us no issue.
