An "official" SS13 server would be impossible, since the history of the game is that its literally stolen / reverse engineered code (albeit with some blessing from Exdv1). The closest thing to "Official" then would be Goon, which, is one of the weirdest forks since it's development past a certain point has been behind closed doors and the source not released, and Exdv1 has contributed to Goon after its inception. A more practical "Official" would be TG, since its source code is released and has become the de facto template other servers are built on.

A good analogy would be, "What's the official distro of Linux?" Like... there isn't one. There's tons of distros out there, some more popular than others, and many that are based off of one of the bigger distros with customization, but picking one to be the "official" one would be just arbitrary at this point.

I meant an official Kiwi Farms server on SS13.

Oh man, I haven't touched this game sine '12. Might be great to get back into and relearn.
 
I am very dumb and have never done this before, but I want to play vidya with my kiwi frens. I'm not sure what newb guide is up to date/most applicable, Please advise?

Download the BYOND client at www.byond.com and make an account, this is the software SS13 runs in.
Because you're doing this to play with Kiwis I recommend doing all the safe shit you do with Kiwi Farms, use burner account emails, don't use account names that could be traced back to other accounts or your personal information.

While this wiki and guide is for TGStation, a different server, its the same code base as what Null is building here, so at the moment its going to be something like 80-90% accurate. SS13 has a stupid, awful interface, and its going to take you some time to get used to. That's okay, breathe.

Read as much as you can but if you get stuck feel free to ask questions. Other veterans are going to be much better at this than you and will probably fuck you up good in the game if you try to start shit with them. Pick a job like Assistant or Janitor, something low impact and without much responsibility. Avoid classes like Engineer or Security or the Cyborgs / AI or the administration until you're more comfortable with the game, because if you fuck these roles up you will be screamed at and possibly have punitive action taken against you for fucking up roles with very specific rules.

When you're ready to have a clown named Dyn slip you with a banana peel, steal your shoes and hit you with a folding chair, then space communists show up and gun you down only to throw you out an airlock while you were busy trying to figure out how to open your backpack, then click the link Null posted and begin your spaceman adventures!

Remember, its only game, why you haff to be mad.

Cool. I've wanted to learn this for a while but I've had so much shit going on I didn't want to have to disappear constantly while in the middle of a round. I should be moving away from all the distractions in a few weeks finally, so if the server hasn't crapped out by then count me in.
