Luffy is eating randomly, picks up the Nika fruit
Nika : "NO NO YOU AREN'T THE CHOSEN ONE STOP"
Luffy eats Nika Fruit...gets face planted by Shanks shaking him
Nika : "Actually...thats pretty funny"
When Luffy initially died, I bet Nika was thinking.
Nika: Goddamn it, Imu. Now you are interfering in arcs that don't even concern you?
At the same time he hears Luffy's dying conscious saying "I lost but--, I lost but---". Yet he hears a couple of unheard word in which...makes him laugh.
Nika: You really are an interesting fellow. No matter what happens, you always bounce back. Just like me, just like Joyboy....just like you. Let see how far you go....with nothing holding you back.

And then the Drums of Liberation play.

I'm looking forward to the explanation of how or why Luffy was able to awaken the Fruit on Onigashima after dying (or being near-death). It's been mentioned that it's possible when you exceed your limits (in which your body and mind are at even level to the Fruit's powers), but does that mean coming close to dying, or do certain Fruits have certain conditions to meet with those exceeded limits? Because if Luffy had to die to Awaken, how come the previous eaters of the Fruit didn't? Was it 'cause they died of old age without meeting their fullest potential? Were their deaths just too pathetic? Did all of them hit that brick wall before they died?

Kind of like how Oda made it where Luffy unlocks Gear 5 and has it a super state awakened by laughter/happiness and being a carefree idiot instead of most shonen powerups being from a state of anger/righteous fury like Goku's first Super Saiyan moment against Frieza (which is what IIRC, the first revelation of Gear 5 was compared to).
It's astounding that it took Oda to decide "Nah, I want my protagonist to have endless joy when he peaks" to break the "righteous anger" pattern. Yeah, Luffy has dabbled in "righteous anger" in the past, and he's screamed his attacks at full/maximum power as well, and yet, what makes Luffy Luffy is his dopey grin.

Oh man, if it turns out making Imu smile and/or laugh is what defeats him and saves the world...
Oda-sama pls.

There’s a chance, but I’ve always felt the Imu meeting Luffy thing would be Imu seeing Luffy in Gear 5, and is shocked that the man who has the power of Joy Boy, and the one who can destroy everything the WG has built….is a complete idiot.

It has been said that people who survived near death experiences have new understanding on life sometimes. Maybe that helped. Also, they might not have been as free as Luffy. It is worth mentioning that Nika might have been waiting for Poseidon to be reincarnated.

i mean brook legit had to die for his fruit to even do anything and thats not even to awaken it. so maybe its got something to do with your body syncing with the fruits powers. so for luffy it was not the dying but rather his desire to beat kaido and set everyone free that awoke the nika powers. lucci most likely got his fruit awakened by just being a strong hunter and embracing his inner jaguar or whatever cat he is. but who knows might also just be based on how well you mesh with the souls of the past users

Since Vegapunk theorizes that DF are linked to the desires of the user I can say this is pretty accurate. Doflamingo probably unlocked his DF due to his desire to control and get revenge on the world.

it works for laws fruit too. even after he ate it he still had to figure out medical stuff to actually be able to use it otherwise he could have saved corazon. the one im most curious about though is chopper because most of his ability is due to the rumble balls so is it possible choppers actually limiting himself by using science when he could be more like the mink tribe maybe? if not full on human with no antlers or anything?

I thought it was that the desire of humans spawned Devil Fruits. And I mean not every Devil Fruit fits perfectly with its user. Like the most useless of Devil Fruits, the Jacket Jacket Fruit is weird for someone like Kelly Funk who probably would want to just beat the shit out of people on his own without needing his brother around to be useful.

The reason Oda is the most successful mangaka not because it's a long running series, but he keeps his audience guessing as well.
Like what are the 2 DFs that Rocks needed and why one of them had to be eaten by Harald for the true power of the DF to be unlocked. These 2 DFs have to be important if Rocks announced to Imu that he would come back. Luffy has the strongest Zoan DF, Blackbeard has the strongest Logia DF and I still think the strongest Paramecia DF debate is still in the air for big mom, whitebeard and law. I will probably take a bet that the DF that Rocks wanted in Elbaf was Big Mom's DF since we know that DF was last shown in Elbaf in big mom's flashback. A DF involving the power of souls is pretty strong.

Then there is also the debate if Luffy's final opponent is Imu or Blackbeard. There were 3 wanted posters in a cover panel with knife marks which showed Luffy, Blackbeard and Shirahosi which we know those 2 have the strongest DF known in their classes and Shira is an ancient weapons user, but of course he took Vivi's poster in the end which implies she is a bigger threat then the strongest DF users or ancient weapon users which Oda leaves his audience guessing. Auger and Devon were talking down on Saturn in his awakened mythical zoan state before Devon touched him and said their mission was complete when Saturn asked them what Blackbeard was after.

"That was Haki? I was just coping what my old teacher told me. I did not know the name." That right there. Knowing something and knowing its name are two different things. You would think adults would know the difference. No one is born knowing. You go to Africa, you see an animal you never even heard of before, what is its name? How will you know it if there is no one to tell you?

The “gags ruin narrative” crowd consists almost entirely of speedreaders. I would be curious to see what other story beats this person would consider a “blunder.”
It is not speedreaders, it is pretentious idiots masquerading as fans/critics that cause problems.

Or not true fans. Which is why they want the LA which changes everything.
Thing is, they are wrong. The LA is still recognizably One Piece. Same tone, spirit and heart. They want a version of the story that changes everything about what One Piece is about. Their version would have sucked. These are the guys that would have made Luffy a terrorist, a queer icon, a battle maniac and/or an emo. They do not want One Piece, they want to wank.

Current One Piece is the Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past from the Future. I get the flashbacks, but every fucking arc.
