One Way Heroics - And the new one

The base idea behind OWH and everything attached to it is mixing elements of roguelikes, like random item drops, turn based combat and food management with autoscrolling. Most actions you take, be it walking, attacking, trading, chatting with your party members, will have the screen scroll to the left a bit, and once you get to the left edge of the screen, you're toast. Doesn't matter how much HP you have or armor you wear, you're fucked. It's also where most of the tension comes from, since you need to balance getting levels with making progress - mismanage your time, and you might get stuck in a dungeon and get swallowed.

There's a free version, but I know pretty much nothing about that one. Not that it matters, because the original is dirt cheap on Steam. There's also the upgraded version, titled One Way Heroics Plus, which, among other things, adds additional classes and expands some aspects of the plot (which is mostly standard, but has the odd decent surprise here and there). And to add to that, we got Mystery Chronicle, which is essentially the people behind Shiren the Wanderer doing their own take on the formula (which started out as a port of the original, incidentally), heavily polishing the graphical side of things and adding bits like Dangan Ronpa students being playable (yes).

Got this today and played it for a couple of hours. Don't know why it's so addicting but every time I play I can't put it down. Just one more go. Just a little longer. And I haven't even touched the other classes yet, just Swordsman.

I have been trying out the Mystery Chronicle version and while I do kinda like the new graphics the game itself seems to have some rough edges. Like it has some weird pauses and hitches even though it never leaves 30fps. Maybe it's just me but it feels like the whole game is slower than the originals, more talking, more pauses, it running at 30 fps than 60, etc.
With some patches it would be the better version of the three (even though the music on the original is better in my opinion). But for me, it's just nice to see this random Japanese indie game get a wider audience and more production value behind it.

Having sunken some time into Mystery Chronicle now, the constant interruptions feel a lot more intrusive than they did in the original. I don't need to be told at the start of every run that I can pick one of my mentors to come along with me, for one.

I do like the Ult. Students and Wanderer gimmicks, though, even when I do keep forgetting to actually use abilities on my runs...

Bumping the fuck out of this thread since I've been playing Mystery Chronicle a whole lot more (and actually completing a couple games for once, including getting to the End of the World) and got access to the Wrestler and Samurai classes.

And boy, they busted. Wrestler is pretty much tailor made to stack Pugilism since they can't equip anything whatsoever but get levels in Strength and Agility all the time so you can focus solely on carrying healing items, and getting far enough with the Samurai pretty much guarantees a win since he has a skill that, provided it's used often enough and used in conjunction with his starting weapon, kills almost everything in one hit. Don't matter if it's a Golem, a Dragon or the pesky undead, if they manage to live through the first hit, they're bound to die from the second.

Still have no idea how you recruit the Dark Angel, though. Already tried throwing Buddy Tablets and Brainwashing Medicine at her, but all she does is complain about me using petty tricks.
