Honestly I don't think any of the episodes got to the level of the pilot. Still enjoyed it though. Hope there is a season 2. I wanna see what other special guests they can bring in.

I actually have a theory the century egg joke dates back to lyle's old podcast swaggalaggin. I bet it was originally suppose to be a "virgin boy egg" but even adult swim told them that was too far so they changed it to a century egg. Zach probably picked it up from lyle's obsession with nasty chinese eggs. That joke is the one I recognized the oldest origin to.

I'm pretty sure they mention the century egg in the Sleepycast episode with Matt and Woolie from the Superbestfriends. Zach wasn't in it, but Oney and Mick (and Stamper) were, and Mick took the chance as he always does to talk about weird Chinese cultural shit, in this instance the obsession with eggs.

So it could come from that, too.

Is that the same episode with the Mao Poster?

I don't recognize what you mean by that. It's the same episode with the "Legal offices of Maybe and I don't know, call us now" skit.

Yeah it was where mick was talking about American commies buying overpriced mao merch, which I thought mick also included the egg skit. I’m also pretty sure I haven’t seen the legal team episod emostly because I watch it out of order for flavor.

It's not the funniest thing ever but it's still good and it's very charming which is a quality missing from a lot of animation these days. If we get more episodes then we can look back at season 1 as that 'rough around the edges' 1st season just like The Simpsons.

I need to pirate some episodes for my collection

I can't believe Zach included a reference to Bicentennial Man in the episode with Shrimp during Pim's fantasy montage. What's more is I swear I remember Zach describing that scene to Tomar in an episode of OneyPlays. If Zach uses OneyPlays to bounce jokes ideas I don't mind because alot of the jokes in Smiling Friends are scenarios he described on OneyPlays.

I can totally believe all those hypocriticals were just joke ideas for the show.

I enjoyed Smiling Friends, it was a nice breath of fresh air. It's good to have an animated show that isn't nihilistic or sarcastic where the main characters bully the others just to feel superior. Here it's 2 guys who just want to put a smile on everybody's face and to show that there's more to life than being angry or sad. It's rare in the western adult animation. That said, it was a mistake to release the entire season, the show isn't written to be binge-watched.

I like how the city Smiling Friends takes place in a total shithole of a city.
And their company is placed between an asylum and a toilet emporium.
I like that there's always that S graffiti somewhere on a wall.

My theory is that it was intended for a traditional release the second half of ‘21, but got pushed back and this was a compromise on the schedule.

Smiling Friends made me laugh, sure, but it made me laugh using setups that might not have been funny at all were it not for good voice acting and knowing when to stop the joke.

In theory weird noises or just random violence is stuff I do not care for, especially since so many producers of "animation for adults" have gone to those wells too many times, but in SF the execution was great.

Good writing and timing can do wonders.

The bit where the one hell demon keeps throwing his hands in Charlie's face reminded me of this bit

Saw this on Twitter.

When you wouldn't mind supporting a product but can't because lol, fuck you we will provide no way for you to watch it despite internet existing.
Yep, at a minimum it seems like the only legit way to see the show right now is a 40 dollar monthly minimum cable subscription. Hulu only has like 12 of Adult Swim's bigger shows. The closest streaming release is February and it seems only on HBO max. This massive separation of media in the internet age is bonkers.

I enjoyed it overall. Some episodes aren't quite as good as the others, but I'd chalk that up to it simply being the first season. Hopefully in the next season we'll see more of Alan and Glep. Much as I love Charlie and Pim, I kinda felt the other two were underutilized. Well, mostly Alan, I would see Glep being used a bit more sparingly by comparison due to his speech and mannerisms.

This show definitely has a lot of potential. My favorite episodes so far would be the pilot, Shrimp Quest and Enchanted Forest.
