How is it that the Oney Plays group have avoided the sorts of drama traps that you see a lot of other internet personalities fall into? Like their former adjacent creators Game Grumps had the Dream Daddy thing along with the collapse of all their sub projects and alt content or Supermega's tarnishing because of the rape stuff and their own burnout

Playing off any drama that does happen (see the "power move" clip) or just not talking about it publicly and letting it die in the public consciousness as a result. There's people still butthurt over Chris's views on Irish Travelers on Sleepycast and Zach's political takes, but neither of them comment on it, so most people don't remember, don't know and/or don't care if they aren't calling it based.
If they don't seem to give a fuck, it's hard for people that have a lot of fucks to give to have anything stick.

Tomar co-runs Studio Yotta and there's their major involvement with Smiling Friends, too, so they probably have to wrangle or watch enough adults acting like children as is. Why re-enact it when you're in your thirties or even pushing fourty?

I didnt consider that! Come to think of it a lot of these channels do just acknowledge it, apologize or do some stupid serious thing that cements it into the public consciousness. Chris and co are doing a good job keeping any drama that comes their way irrelevant

It's a rare thing, but this is the result of not pandering to and cultivating an audience of SJWs. By keeping your head down you at worst get a few faggots chimping on reddit/bluesky, then you ignore that rather than start apologizing or sperging out over it and it massively reduces the odds of it turning into a shitstorm.

It also helps they are somewhat of a niche channel (not even the faggots who come from Smiling Friends know about Zach, Sleepycast or Oneyplays) so they aren't very good content for drama whore channels.

Same thing can be said about ColdOnes and Joji.

When it comes to drama a an eceleb, you win by doing absolutely nothing. Look at Channel Awesome for both good examples (Doug) and bad ones (everyone else). A while ago, Hbomberguy or some other video essayist ran a hit piece on Internet Historian (both are huge channels), which included a credible accusation of plaigirism along with whining about ties to 4chan. IH's response? Fix the video quietly and keep going.
Shit like Oney's breakup with Veronica/Mick or their previous and continued use of slurs would be good fuel for dramamongers but Oney and crew have a parasocial loyal fanbase that they haven't attacked like Idubbbz.

There's like three simple rules to follow so you don't fall into that shit as a relatively popular internet personality.
1. Don't be a sex pest.
2. Don't cultivate an audience of progressive ideologues who regularly eat their own the moment they're perceived to be stepping out of line.
3. Don't address drama or controversies that you're either implicated in, involved with or adjacent to because just adds fuel to the fire even if your intention is to extinguish it.
Unfortunately, most "content creators" are utterly incapable of following these rules.

A big part of it is that it's very obvious there is no hate or malice behind what they say. So Chris could tell Julian "hey Julian what's it like being a gay Spaniard who sucks dicks and likes dicks and plays with dicks?"

"It's pretty good Chris". And then they laugh. If you know someone and are comfortable with them you can say all sorts of crazy things and be fine with it because you know they don't mean anything bad by it. Now let's say I went out to lunch with someone like Anita Sarkeesian. I would be very self-conscious and worrying that any random thing I said would be interpreted by her in the worst way. She could get a wild hair up her ass and decide she wants to cancel me several months from now because I made some trivial mistake.
 
I'm catching up on the Hasan vs. H3H3 discussion and reading all the anne frank posting in Oney's or Zach's voice is an amusing experience.
