I can overlook a lot in a game, and while "I get it" I hate how the main character is gender fluid. I get it because "just let the kids dress themselves in whatever they like without choosing male/female" is a gameplay choice and it doesn't matter in the end, it still reeks of woke bullshit in a game already trying to convince people that "you aren't disabled, you're the perfect shape you are supposed to be".
On top of that the game was boring. The musical numbers prove it's intended to be a kids game/kids show like you said but instead of a wacky space king telling you to roll stuff up, you're a kid who doesn't want to go to school but does anyway. If you don't immediately self-identify with the main character, you won't be hooked and will have to slog through watching a depressed kid go about his day despite being depressed, hoping the gameplay eventually makes the slog worth it.
Plus the first time the kid tries to use his "powers" he gets dog shit on his head. This is too much like real life where if you try, you get shit on. Boring game with a narrative that off the bat tells you using your powers is risky...what a message.
