As much as I like calling people faggots on the internet, if I were to run any sort of organization, I'd be ejecting people like this no questions asked. This whole XLibre drama has made me seriously consider putting together a full trip mouse-to-monitor latency testing rig for Xorg/XLibre/Wayland. The Wayland people are non-stop gaslighting us with bullshit. I remember when "BETTER PERFORMANCE" was like THE selling point of Wayland 15 years ago, not this "no-tearing, perfect frame" crap they say now. That has disappeared because any performance difference is usually within the margin of error. The reality is Wayland feels slow (to me). I don't care if there's technically multiple cursors on the screen at the same time due to tearing, my eyeballs and brains filter it out, but I definitely feel it when my cursor is vsync'd.

That's very similar to systemd's "faster boot times" now that you mention.

I would have noticed if every comment looked like "Here's a patch because we don't need to export this symbol. Also, total Jew death, Hitler will rise again."

And has GitHub publicly responded to calls to ban this repo? If this comment is to be believed, they are giving implausible "lies" to justify not banning it or not banning individual users. Or is this in reference to comments elsewhere on GitHub? It's hard to figure out.

I wouldn't be surprised if this user was hallucinating, but that's on purpose if so. Fairly common belligerent bitch pattern: "this guy is a nazi because i think so" -> "ban this guy" -> "no? wow github supports nazis" -> "anything you say in response except immediate obesiance is just an excuse"

• Smartphone capable of recording in 240hz. Apparently phones do this now, including mine. Hopefully it's not just interpolated to hell.
• Custom kernel module which when activated gets recognized as a mouse by udev and begins to report mouse movements, simultaneously triggering the ESP32 to turn on the LED.

Record both the LED and the monitor at the same time at a high framerate. Measure the delay between the cursor movements and the LED. This removes all complexity and variables associated with building a physical mouse testing rig. Reproducible by others with cheap and/or non-specialized equipment.

This would also let you test stuff like stock vs zen kernel.

Please provide input, I'm not much of a bread board person.

I recently watched this 3kliksphilip video testing the input latency of Counter Strike, and although I think you wouldn't want to exactly copy his method, it should be helpful for this.

I want to reduce non-display manager latency as much as possible. Sequentially speaking I'd even consider begin reporting mouse movements from the kernel module before signalling to the microcontroller just we we're absolutely certain I'm not introducing additional latency by blocking with the TTY UART communication. According my brief research the latency of UART comms+physical LED activation is microsecond range. Meanwhile traditional USB polling is 1000hz, too slow. ESP32-S3 (apparently) is often used with a RTOS, but it may be better to program it bare metal to avoid the latency of the OS, but perhaps it's also microsecond range in which case it's irrelevant because the camera is in millisecond range.

I'd like someone who has experience with ESP32s to comment just how much latency is involved with something like this.

Your approach should work for for comparing the relative delay between X and Wayland. But you don't actually need neither an external microcontroller nor a kernel module (altho the latter might reduce latency - not that this matters, assuming it stays the same).
Specifically you should be able to read keyboard events via evdev in userspace (/dev/input/eventXX) and toggle some LED device (maybe the keyboard capslock/numpad enable LED) via sysfs (/sys/class/leds/).

Alternatively there was some device Nvidia sent to a bunch of tech-fluencers, which was able to emit mouse clicks via usb and detect changes on-screen with a photo-diode. In theory you don't need such a complex setup if you just want to compare them, but an absolute input-latency number would be interesting in general.

Using the keyboard LEDs was a good idea, though it's kinda awkward to hold the keyboard up by your screen while recording.

I got a proof of concept going with a sysfs triggerable kernel module. I'll update the thread later with initial test results and code once I clean it up.
