What's wrong with elixir? The author is a bit derp but I'm not sure why adding a giant rust dependency tree would be better.

For some reason I've never understood this phrase and I've never bothered learning it.

Imagine a beer someone gave you, "gratis" to use a Latinism. Free of charge. That's the meaning. The comparison is "free as in speech", which is that you are free to say what's on your mind, "libre" to use a Latinism. "Free"/libre in the ideal sense, as there are really no jurisdictions where you actually have freedom to eg. yell "fire" in a crowded theater or tell someone to assassinate a politician. The whole point is to differentiate the amphiboly of the word "free", as English sucks at making this distinction, whereas other languages are not so impoverished.
