Diseased Open Source Software Community - it's about ethics in Code of Conducts

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Personally I place the blame at JavaScript developers who are incapable of uploading a file to a web server and instead insist on piggybacking CDNs.
I've never understood this one. Quite apart from the potential networking issues, you also have to play with await-load hooks for all the scripts you're using, which introduces significant delays in getting the site up and running. You can have devs that will spend ages optimising for server-side rendering and rehydration and so on, then throw in some huge chunk of code from a CDN that nukes all their effort.

I think the expectation is that if a dozen or so big popular sites all use the same minimized JS, then chances are the client's browser already has it cached.

I guess?

Well that and distributing the servers around the world. But that one's always seemed to be a bit of microoptimization.

An oopsie woopsie at jsDelivr caused a shit load of websites to break for 5 hours in shithole countries yesterday.
TLS is such a clusterfuck. There's no reason for some JavaScript hosted somewhere, to be used elsewhere, to be encrypted at all. There's even a feature whereby the cryptographic hash checksum digest can be listed with the link, to fail if it doesn't match. It's entirely superfluous to encrypt such a thing.
I think the expectation is that if a dozen or so big popular sites all use the same minimized JS, then chances are the client's browser already has it cached.
Yes, except from what I recall reading recently, this is no longer done because it's a side-channel through which more surveillance can be done. I may be recalling incorrectly, however.

I've never understood this one.

Have you considered they just have no idea how?

Look through random webdev twitters and youtube comments. From people who think the terminal is scary to people who have no idea how to run a container without the cloud or even move a file without a GUI. I'm surprised they're even able to run the project locally for development. I've seen a dude say he didn't want to use PHP for his project because he needs something he can use javascript with.

I also think it has to do with everyone absolutely refusing to optimize their code, so they're scared if they have a central server or try to handle deployment without a cloud everything will be slow as hell.

Talking about this, you guys were talking here or in the linux thread about th3oGG or whatever his name is, he recently made a video about how he was very wrong, and it turns out running everything in the client's browser is in fact slower than using a central server close to your database.

I, jimaek, take full responsibility for this outage. I should’ve not made any assumptions about the migration and should’ve taken extra precautions.
This outage is embarrassing, and I apologize to everyone who was affected!

buck broken over an SSL cert. tbh if you're so incompetent that it takes 5 hours to fix an SSL cert you're in the wrong business.

That used to be the case, but today all browsers completely separate their caches per origin, and they have been doing this for quite a few years.

Even before this it was a tenuous argument; the chances that you had the exact same version of jQuery in your cache was pretty small. Most people only visit a handful of sites frequently.

The only reason is quick prototyping. It's OK for that. Anyone else using it is a webshit.

Update code-of-conduct.md to resolve CNCF out of compliance activity. #791

https://github.com/cncf/foundation/pull/791 [Archive]
commit.png

Problem

The CNCF KubeCon NA 2024 event has been organized in a state actively discriminating against and deputizing civilians to weaponize government against an at risk minority with non-trivial representation in the larger cloud native community.

This continued pattern of non-compliance with CNCF CoC should be corrected via behavioral change, or policy change to eliminate risks to the CNCF of being perceived as being above accountability to their own policies.

Resolution

Correct the Code of Conduct to correctly reflect CNCF behavior and resolve the out-of-compliance actions of the CNCF with regards to their promotion of community events in discriminatory hostile venues. By updating the CoC, adherence to the CoC can be resolved and this change commit can be referenced as the official determination of the CNCF if future complaints of gender discrimination are raised.

To cut through the bullshit: Troons are mad simply because a tech conference is being held in Utah.
Yes, really. That's it. Utah is a "problematic" state (or whatever) for troons, so they want to put pressure on the organizers with this little stunt.

In this case, the troon making the commit is being cheeky by removing a line about how the CNCF (Cloud Native Computing Foundation) supports "gender, gender identity and expression". Because obviously, holding their conference in Utah ackshually proves they're transphobic! 😢 The CoC should therefore be amended to reflect this. ✊😔

I will clarify the impact to KubeCon attendees.

The state of Utah has mobilized untrained deputized civilians. Those individual activists likely to question individuals under HB 257 are not subject to proper training or education of this law, and are often motivated by fear and hate to question anyone's genitalia.

This should be of great concern to the entire gender spectrum, trans identifying, and non, as cis gender people also experience harassment from gender critical activists.

While the current letter of the law may not apply to the facilities utilized by the event organizers and event partners, a state sanctioned culture of discrimination often leads to escalating boldness and an increase in discriminatory harassment in and beyond the legal scope of state sanctioned discrimination laws.

This event was organized before HB 257 was passed into law, however many state's similar legislation is not a new or surprising result as the legislation in question was already proposed and well known in the transgender community for states including Utah and other hotbeds of gender critical activism.

This situation can be entirely avoided with proper transgender representation in future CNCF planning and event organizing efforts.

The current statement provided by the CNCF fails to address how this type of risk will be mitigated in the future, or if it will even be a consideration in future event planning.

Until and unless preventative policy is adopted to avoid this type of risk in the future, I recommend this PR to remain open and or merged to facilitate CNCF remediation or compliance with the CoC.

Removing these words from the CoC would be the best thing happening to the CNCF.

But we all know this isn't happening.

How is this not just a blatant exertion of power? Let's say the con pulls out of Utah. So fucking what? Whatever "oppression" goes on in Utah will still happen and the only thing of consequence is that a troon managed to satisfy his fetish by bullying other people into submission.

UTAH “BATHROOM BILL” STATEMENT

Updated May 3, 2024

Please view this blog for more information on how & when conference venue locations are chosen.

In light of recent legislative actions in Utah, specifically the passing of HB 257, we understand the concerns and apprehensions that have emerged within our transgender and gender-diverse community members regarding KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America 2024 in Salt Lake City. The discourse surrounding HB 257 has been confusing and, at times, misleading, contributing to an atmosphere of uncertainty.

To clarify the legislation, this law does not extend to privately owned venues, including those hosting our conference and related activities. The Salt Palace Convention Center, our conference venue, and the connected Hyatt Regency Salt Lake City are not affected by this law. Both have inclusive, all-gender restroom facilities available.

Additionally:

  • No other hotels are affected by HB 257.
  • The Salt Lake Airport has all-gender restrooms.
  • HB 257 does not apply to any privately owned venue or facility (hotels, restaurants, shopping centers, cultural attractions etc).
  • Outside of schools, HB 257 only covers restrooms connected to changing rooms in government owned buildings (and even then there is no legal consequence if one of these restrooms is used).
  • Salt Lake City boasts a vibrant LGBTQ+ community. For more details on local LGBTQ+ resources and to learn more, visit: Salt Lake City’s LGBTQ Community Resources.
The ACLU of Utah has provided a detailed overview and FAQ on HB 257, which we highly recommend for those seeking further clarification: ACLU Utah HB 257 Overview

We look forward to welcoming you to Salt Lake City for a memorable and safe KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America 2024, or at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon + Open Source Summmit + AI_Dev China or KubeCon + CloudNativeCon India also happening this year.

I want to highlight this bit:

It's not news here on KF, but tech troons and CoC proponents are clearly saboteurs. :story: It's so transparent too! They try to raise a stink on github & social media about one of their pet issues, and even if they know they likely won't accomplish their main goal, they still try to leverage the drama into some kind of advantage for them. Like the above, where they're angling to get a foot in the door.
They know if they can get an inside man on the CNCF board, they'll have a better chance of succeeding next time they cry about muh troon genocide or whatever.

The troons are also using this as an opportunity to take note of any wrongthinkers in their midst.

The best thing about @usrbinkat making an issue in GitHub about the @CloudNativeFdn being pro-transphobia is that the transphobes in the kubernetes community are starting to self-identify. It helps us to know who folks are safe around and who they aren’t.

CNCF / KubeCon responded yesterday to the troons' hand-wringing.

KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America 2024 and Utah’s Bathroom Bill

Posted on May 8, 2024
CNCF and the Linux Foundation are saddened by the Utah state legislature’s passing of HB 257, an anti-equal rights law commonly referred to as the “Utah bathroom bill.” Notwithstanding the new Utah law, CNCF is committed to ensuring that KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America 2024 (KubeCon NA) is a welcoming and inclusive space for all attendees. Please see our earlier Statement on Anti-Equal Rights and Event Locations from January.

As we have done at prior conferences for years, we will continue to provide all-gender restrooms at KubeCon NA. Within the event and community spaces, our event staff and security teams, in collaboration with the CNCF Code of Conduct Committee, will continue to enforce the CNCF Code of Conduct and Linux Foundation Events Code of Conduct, both of which prohibit harassment based on gender identity and gender expression.

Please know that most Utahns support LGBTQ+ protections. Both the Mayor of Salt Lake City and the Salt Lake City Council have publicly opposed the Utah bathroom bill, and Salt Lake City itself has a vibrant LGBTQ+ population ranking 13th largest in the U.S. Nonetheless, we understand and empathize with community members’ concerns. To support the safety of our community members, in accordance with our standard security practices at all KubeCon conferences, we will provide a security escort to any attendee upon request.

The Linux Foundation and CNCF are engaged in discussions with local organizations, including Equality Utah, Utah Pride Center, and Project Rainbow Utah, to get their recommendations and resources on how we can best ensure a positive and safe experience in Salt Lake City for KubeCon NA attendees from the LGBTQ+ community (e.g., obtaining lists of LGBTQ+-friendly restaurants and shops). Project Rainbow has informed us that Transgender Awareness Week will take place in Salt Lake City November 13-20, overlapping with KubeCon NA, offering attendees an opportunity to support local awareness efforts should they choose. We will update the Diversity & Inclusion page of the KubeCon NA website when we have more details to share.

Even with these efforts to provide a safe and inclusive space, we understand why some people might not feel comfortable visiting Utah. Thus, if any attendee changes their mind about attending due to HB 257, we will fully refund their ticket. Additionally, if any CNCF committee, SIG, TAG, or other group no longer feels comfortable meeting in Salt Lake City but still wants to meet in person this year, CNCF will provide an alternative venue for meeting face-to-face, such as at another CNCF/LF event.

All attendees will have lawful access to restrooms while traveling for KubeCon NA

We have researched and confirmed that KubeCon NA attendees will be able to lawfully use restrooms at the convention center, the Salt Lake City airport, all Salt Lake City hotels, restaurants, shops, and other privately owned establishments throughout the city. This is because the Utah law applies only to K-12 public school restrooms and to changing rooms in government-owned buildings. The Utah law does not apply to privately owned establishments.

Furthermore, all-gender bathrooms will be available (in addition to men’s and women’s bathrooms) at the airport, convention center, and the lobby of the Hyatt Regency hotel connected to the convention center.

It’s a common misunderstanding that HB 257 applies more broadly. As explained by the ACLU of Utah’s FAQ on HB 257, “…the scope of the new law is, in fact, more limited than the news coverage of this bill would suggest.”

It is not feasible to change venues at this point in time

Had the Utah bathroom bill already been enacted when we were evaluating potential locations for KubeCon NA, we would not have chosen Utah as the location for our conference. However, we committed to Salt Lake City as the venue for this year’s conference in 2022 and entered into contracts with the convention center, hotels, and vendors–which are legally binding and cannot be canceled–before HB 257 was introduced.

Venues for conference spaces that are large enough to host a KubeCon North America conference (which typically have 10,000+ attendees) fill up several years in advance. Thus, in order to secure space, CNCF must book a venue 2-4 years in advance.

For these reasons, it is not feasible at this time to find an alternative venue for KubeCon NA.

Canceling KubeCon NA is not a viable option, due to the detrimental impact cancellation would have on our projects and our community. Hosting conferences that bring people together to connect, share best practices and knowledge, and advance cloud native technology is critical to supporting our mission to make cloud native computing ubiquitous. Just as importantly, revenue from KubeCon events funds infrastructure, tooling, security audits, mentorships, scholarships, and support for CNCF projects and our community. The financial impact of canceling KubeCon NA would force us to reduce support for projects and the community by several million dollars. By canceling, we would also be letting down our many community members who have already invested countless hours in planning, preparing talks and demos, organizing co-located events and programs, and more for KubeCon NA.

CNCF is committed to geographical diversity to serve all our community members no matter where they reside. As such, this year, in addition to KubeCon North America and KubeCon Europe, we are hosting KubeCon China and KubeCon India. Our hope is that by bringing KubeCon to a broader set of geographies, we can make attendance at a KubeCon accessible to more of our global community. If you’re not comfortable joining KubeCon NA this year, please consider attending one of our other KubeCon conferences or other CNCF events, which include CloudNativeSecurityCon and three KubeDays.
tl;dr They grovel a bit and swear they love troons, but they aren't going to cancel the convention or change venues.

There were only a couple Palestinian flags but I highly recommend they hold their conference in Palestine. If that won't work, then either Ukraine or Saudi Arabia would be good alternatives.

The NixOS Community recently had a troon exodus. After a brief dilation break, they're back with a spite-fork of the Nix package manager called Lix. Their community standards are basically synonymous with those of a subreddit: be nice to troons and no right wing ideology because it's le bad. I don't see it lasting very long, especially if 43% of their dev team is prone to git commit -m "ACK!".

Link to the project: https://lix.systems/

I expect this to go the way of Ayo.js, a failed fork of Node.js by troons upset at the inadequate levels of censorship and ostracism in the Node community: https://github.com/ayojs/ayo
From the lix community standards page:
For the avoidance of doubt, we do not tolerate discrimination such as racism, sexism, transmisia, pluralphobia, ableism or other sorts of discrimination; we do not tolerate unwelcome sexual advances, stalking, harassment or doxing.

We do not tolerate peddling right-wing ideology, including but not limited to fascism, denying discrimination exists, and other such things.
If I can't tell trannies to fuck off then how am I supposed to stop unwelcome sexual advances?
They posted on the wrong thread, so time for crossposting.

The TL;DR is Nix pissed off troons somehow so they forked Nix and called it Lix.
