I don't understand their decisions. Are they just hoping this goes away? It won't. What he did was so depraved, disgusting and horrifying, people aren't just going to forget. Especially his victims, who testified against him a decade later.

There is literally nothing redeeming about what he did. Even if they weren't underage, they were still his sisters. Even if they weren't, it was still rape, thousands of times. Even if it wasn't, he literally made them bleed in agonizing pain.

Why the fuck do you protect this man, DebConf?

This is ridiculous. I was thinking they're going to quietly let Jeremy Bicha present while simultaneously pretending it didn't happen. But they're worried about IRC? People want to see how many fucking Debian people professionally sit down to listen to a chomo give a totally unnecessary and pointless changelog review for GNOME.

Most of the talks at DebConf are pointless and provide little value to anyone. DebConf, like the majority of conferences in FOSS, are pork barrel wastes of donor money to throw a party. They do not create value, they just waste money.

Conference culture needs to die. I thought Casey Muratoi had some good thoughts on conferences, relating to why he stopped doing the Handmade Conference.
tldw: Conferences are just gatekeeping information that you could have posted online in a better way. It's unethical and immoral to limit access based on cost and travel restrictions. There is no solution. No amount of free passes and diversity initiatives fix this.

Bicha has got to be a folk hero for a bunch of them. He's a guy who got to live out their most depraved fantasies and they're in a position to help him while maintaining some level of deniability. Any time they want to jerk off they can just go read the horrifying testimony of his victims.

They're also so kneejerk retarded that they have to protect one of their own because people with the wrong opinions are attacking him.

It would have been really awkward to cancel the disgraced pedophile rapist's talk, can you imagine the dead air, or if someone else had to review GNOME's changelogs? What would people think? What would they say?

For DebConf there is no information to gatekeep. HandmadeConf had lots of high quality talks. Mike Acton's 3 big lies talk is always good, something the Wayland developers should really watch. Namely lie #1: Software is the platform.

I caught bits of the two preceding his. The one immediately before was a woman talking about how she set up XMPP for her family. I really couldn't see anything more technical in her talk than that. And even then there were no details. The one before seemed more involved but nothing that deep and he said himself that his talk was a "plea for help" hoping to get others involved. The room looked mostly empty for both of them - about sixteen people?

And more than that also now - by their actions they clearly knew before the talk about his past and were actively going to bat for him. There's no excuse for that.

And when the inevitable accusations of hypocrisy from the Progressives come in: "Oooooh, now you believe in cancel culture do you?" the reply is pretty easy: "Yes, because now it's about people who molest six year old girls not who have a different political view".
