I thought there is no ethical consumption under capitalism. Why would it matter what Framework does with its money? By that logic, aren’t we all fascists because we pay taxes to the U.S. government or gave our money to fascists at one point? Might as well not worry too much about it.

Serious is a strong word, but they're not written by trolls. The main article and the mutant license there, is by Aria Salvatrice - a French Fediverse tranny, that looks like this:

The rest is also more or less obscure activist slop, in most cases only used by the person that wrote it, for projects like way too detailsed black afro hair 3D models. Unless your evil capitalist company makes things like this (an actual example, linked to, on one of these licenses websites), it will likely never have to deal, with any of these licenses.

When someone spends their time on forums calling people fascists for posting about a linux distribution, you just know they're too annoying, disgusting and socially grating to acquire a regular job, so it's not like they can afford to buy a new Framework computer anyway. It's just more empty gestures from the cum-encrusted basement these trannies live in.
Good on Framework for not taking these lowlifes seriously.
 
So for someone who doesn't have the time to go through the entire Framework brouhaha, can I get a tl;dr? I looked at Framework a few years ago so I'm curious to see what's going on.

Framework sponsored Hyprland development and tweeted support for switching from Windows 11 to Omarchy.

As both Hyprland and Omarchy’s creators have been deemed “fascist” by the trans community, by the transitive property of retardation, this means Framework is now fascist.

Their CEO is refusing to kowtow to the trannies. If I didn’t like Apple laptop build quality so much, I’d probably go order a new Framework today out of sheer gratitude.

The Framework is a somewhat new (founded 2020) laptop (and now desktop) company whose brand is highly serviceable, repairable, modular laptops, where every part can be replaced with ordinary tools. That way you don't have to buy a whole new laptop to upgrade your CPU/memory/whatever.

Framework has actively engaged with the Open Source community by providing "sponsorships" for software compatible with their laptops, such as different Linux distros. The current rage-storm is about two things:
  • Recently, Framework announced sponsorship of Hyprland, a Wayland desktop environment, IIRC funding them with $600/month. Hyprland is run by "Vaxry" (a pseudonymous Polish developer). The accusations against Vaxry are complicated, but the main issue seems to be that long ago some minor jokes about troons were bandied about in the Hyprland Discord in the #general (off-topic) channel. After complaints, Vaxry apologized for any offense, adopted a CoC, and put an end to such banter. But in spite of this, these incidents keep getting brought up, often with context omitted that makes clear they were only jokes. Drew DeVault (Lolcow thread) wrote an attack piece. Then, some wokescold from freedesktop.org's (FDO) CoC committee contacted Vaxry, long after the fact, with various threats to remove him from FDO over it. FDO is the organization currently managing a lot of Linux software, including Wayland tools. Vaxry responded angrily, saying it was his own Discord and thus none of the FDO's business, and it was a long time ago, and things have changed, and you have no business threatening me. He posted the exchange to his blog: Part1 Part2 As a result, he was banned and unpersoned from the FDO code repo, which he had been a contributor to, especially the wlroots (Wayland compositor) project. So basically he is now considered a Nazi.
  • Framework's social media accounts have often promoted the Omarchy Linux distro, and IIUC donated Framework laptops to the project to help them develop for it, but they aren't a sponsor of it (as in Hyprland). Nevertheless, that is still considered Nazi endorsement. Omarchy is run by David Heinemeier Hansson, known as DHH, a Danish programmer mostly known for creating Ruby on Rails, and also a racecar driver. On his personal blog, he has expressed "unacceptable" views, such as opposing mass immigration. So, another Nazi.
The end result is that there is now a Framework forum thread "Framework supporting far-right racists?" full of the usual rhetoric about Nazi bars, Nazis at a table, paradox of tolerance. Framework responded to the thread post by saying they sponsor lots of open-source projects and don't worry about the politics of developers, which unsurprisingly was not received well. Framework seems to be leaving the thread up as containment. Multiple such threads were created, but every time, a janny merges the posts into the above thread, which as of now has 700+ posts.

The CEO also posted this to Xitter:

This also provoked a negative reaction from the woke mob about actions being more important than stated beliefs.

I'm still not buying an overpriced novelty laptop.
I will continue buying used ThinkPads.

The entire concept of these fisher-price modular components is just ridiculous. Laptops are already repairable, you just need to know microsoldering. Instead The Raped™ throw up their hands like the helpless children. "Please sell me old stagnating components for twice the cost!" cried the soy-consumers. None of this makes economical sense as long as the $300 ThinkPad exists.

Heck, even newer ThinkPad are more worth it price/performance due to them being subsidized by Microsoft/McAfee as well as economy of scale. Older thinkpads have the benefit of still being pretty damn good and reliable as well.

I don't like the trend of soldered-on RAM or DRM'd WLAN cards, my current Lenovo laptop has only 1 stick + 8GB. My older HP tablet only had 8GB, no sticks.

Funnily enough, their desktop computers comes with soldered-on RAM. they're powerful, yes, but they're also non-expandable. They're being sold as being AI-ready machines, but they have no software for it. Just having one PCIe port wouldve been nice. At least it supports eGPUs on USB4 I guess...

Some people really don't learn, or they go out of their way to not learn. No one cares about your views Mr. CEO, that isn't the point here. You know that. The issue is that you are giving a forbidden far-right racist nazi Deatheater KuKluxKlan KiwiFarmer a modicum of respect which is UNACCEPTABLE and will never be tolerated.

I am not buying one either. I also just buy refurbished Thinkpad or Dell laptops.

But if he has business acumen and stands his ground against the troons
I am certain he will sell a lot of systems.
There is a growing number of people that will spend money and buy substandard products just to own the troons. It is a valid business strategy, especially in 2025.

My honest recommendation is to get a T480 or T480s. The latter is thinner and can go up to 40gib RAM, while the former is thicker and takes up to 64. If you're gunning for a larger screen, you can either buy a W541 now, or wait until December and get a T580, which I can say with HUGE confidence will be ported to Libreboot by then. If you can get either machine for ~150USD, I'd say that's a good deal.
