but i want an "application bar/start menu/place to easily access my applications" I can happily jive with the osx UI - because it provides me a visual location where all my applications are stored and i can open open them without needing to remember what the binary is named or making sure its on my path.
We have solutions for this.

Rofi/drun - You press Super+Space to have a MacOS style bar pop-up and you can do anything with it that you'd be able to on MacOS. You can use .desktop files to act as shortcuts for binaries and other applications or even scripts.

Noctalia - Is an all-in-one solution for notifications, sound, calendar, statistics and all other forms of startmenu stuff. It also comes with a quicklauncher if you're not fond of using Rofi.

And those are just the ones I use, you have plentiful options with Hyprland's "useful utilities" section. You should only really use Hyprland or other tiling window managers if you like the idea where windows automatically tile (wow, shocking), which I'd only recommend if you have some gargantuan screen. It doesn't do much more than a regular floating window manager like Gnome or KDE, because you can also just make windows into regular floating windows. People who use tiling window managers are mostly just massive faggot posers/larpers who think having twenty-five terminals on screen doing the Matrix thing means they're hackers.

Having to access your file system outside of a UI sucks, anyone who says otherwise is a faggot poser.

I thought it would need something like that, maybe if i was younger with better eyes and a giant screen it could be fun to play with, but when you need to increase the font size on every website because text is hard to read even with glasses, ill pass and let the kids with lots of time on their hands play with and enjoy it.

I like to explore the extremes of positions I consider, and the file system can be considered an unhappy medium. Forths usually have no file system, and instead expose a block abstraction. It's hard to call that heavyweight, but a file system is certainly heavyweight in comparison. There are plenty of papers, including one by the SQLite guys, showing how databases can be faster. This wouldn't be possible were the file system truly lightweight, but such is possible because it's not.
In fairness to the filesystems, SQLite can be faster because it isn't doing as much. Every time you open a file, you incur a fair amount of overhead as the OS checks to see whether you have permission to access the file in the mode you're requesting. To put it another way: open() is expensive, but lseek() and read() are cheap. This means that if you have, say, a thousand images and store them all in separate files, you incur the substantial overhead of open() a thousand times, while if you store them in a database (or some specialized indexed container file of your own design), you incur the overhead of open() once and get to amortize it over a thousand accesses, each of which is "opened" by a cheap lseek().

you can actually see this in practice if you play with ipfs at all, in its original implementation which is a loose merkle tree where the file is chunked and stored via sha256 hashes in the filesystem provided by the person running the ipfs server. They want to eventually move to a database system because having billions of tiny files not only makes many file systems unhappy but it incurs the heavy overhead of lots of opens.

I think people call those little MacOS-like widget bars 'docks' these days. I've been on Sway for a minute now and played around with Lambdock when it came out, mostly cause it's written in Scheme. Not really my cup of tea, but I can see why people like em. Tofi/rofi/fuzzel are still superior imo

seeing tards STILL blasted over framework despite it being months ago is heartwarming.

Getting to access your file system outside of a UI rocks. Some situations call for a UI, but most of the time it's easier to use the terminal to look for a file, move a file, to go somewhere and create a file you want to edit, or print out a file you want to read. The only times I think a UI has a serious edge is when I want to sort a bunch of files, and it's easier to like search for a substring that's in a group of filenames and drag all the results out, or ctrl-click a bunch of scattered files in a folder and move them over to somewhere else all at once, or if I want to find a specific file based on a thumbnail. I could come up with other examples of when a file manager rocks, but people who straight-up hate the terminal almost universally have some sort of skill issue they're too lazy to get around, or they can't use the terminal and their ego is wounded for some reason because of other peole talking about the terminal.

I like tiling window managers too, but honestly I don't think you really get any actual benefit from the windows tiling vs just using hotkeys and workspaces more. Alt-tabbing between a million open windows is annoying, but alt-tabbing between two or three isn't a problem, and using different workspaces to keep many windows organized into small groups works in windowed desktop environments the same way that tile-heads are always raving about. And the hotkeys like Super+Enter to open the terminal is great, and I always set up hotkeys for the programs I use, but it's easy to set those up on any desktop environment, and it's just as efficient as the tiling window manager.

seeing framework make libs sperg makes me want to purchase one of thier laptops to play with, but most of them are way outside of what i can afford. I might just throw them a donation to keep up the good fight.

Do you mean a GUI? Because even a command line is a User Interface, and the only way to access your data without one would be to analyze the 1s and 0s on the disc or in the flash storage directly.

Is the part about Omarchy anything more than performative denouncement of the wrongthinkers? Is there anyone out there who actually thought the normie DE KDE was working together with the intentionally normie-unfriendly distro Omarchy?
It’s straight-up virtue signalling, nothing more.

No, using a file manager vs the terminal. How could you possibly read my post that autistically?

What even is the appeal of omarchy, is it not just glorified dotfiles? Why are people donating for a retarded rice lol

Idfk, maybe it's just because I'm a stubborn oldhead autistic nigga but I'm fine with i3wm, XLibre and alacritty lol

I've kinda grown past tinkertranny bullshit, I've basically had the same setup for 5+ years now at this point and I don't see a point in changing shit that just werks

Owning the libs, that's about it. The money would have been much better spent on Arch itself, but afaik they rejected it for political reasons.

It runs its own arch packages like manjaro, has its own kernel like CachyOS, but with more support for Macs coming later down the line since they hired a team of devs to work on it since Asahi is trooncored with a no AI policy, and has a plugin manager for quickshell, so people can write and use plugins by the community rather than having to deal with writing shit themselves. It also has multiple skills to integrate itself into AI agent, including a debugger to fix itself if something crashes and is fixable.

Most of the money going to the project is from connections to DHH.

And that lies the reason open source will never get money. "NO I CANT TAKE FREE MONEY WITH NO DOWNSIDES FROM YOU, YOUR A HECKING BIGOT NAZI!"

A combination of viral marketing and appealing to Macfags, AI cultists and ricers all at once, at a point in time where lots of people are very tired of all the tranny bullshit that has spread its roots through open source software. Despite DHH having far saner takes than the average soy dev and a real chance to coup the retarded commiepedotroons that have captured NixOS, he is an AI cultist through and through. Still not sure whether I prefer troonslop or botslop, all I know is I'm not touching any "agentic OS" with a 50 foot pole.

You call everyone a nazi and not only does the word nazi lose all meaning, you open the door for actual nazis to get into proper discourse.
Sounds like something a Nazi would say.

Welcome to the Kiwi Farms. We're all autistic here. You're autistic too, else you wouldn't have come here.

Hay guys, new lolcense just dropped. Introducing the Filthy Human Hands license. Ooh, catchy title. What are the terms?

LICENSE TERMS

1. No part of a work under this license may be used or reproduced in any manner for the purposes of training autonomous agents, generating anything created by artificial intelligence (AI), any form of data mining/scraping, or related systems and technologies.

Ah, no feeding into the machine allowed. Understandable. A huge concern for many considering releasing creative work in the modern era. What else we got?

2. No part of a work under this license may be used or reproduced in any manner by organizations or businesses with more than fifty (50) employees. An exception is granted to allow ISPs and other hosting services to reproduce the work for the purposes of display and distribution.

Uh… okay. So we've got kind of an arbitrary distinction there, and one where someone could be a dick with who counts as an "employee" if they wanted to. Also, what if a company with 49 employees uses this project as a cornerstone of their entire business model and they really need to bring in someone else? Do they have to fire someone first? This is silly and probably unenforceable anyway. What else do we have?

3. No part of a work under this license may be used or reproduced in any manner which promotes bigotry of any kind. This includes but is not limited to fascism, racism, sexism, misogyny, ableism, transphobia (including erasure and/or denial of nonbinary identities), homophobia…

Ah, okay, there it is. Can't use it for wrongthink. So it's anti-AI scraping at the start but in the end it's yet another anti-chud license. Oh, what? You weren't finished? Okay, continue.

…ageism, sane-ism (including denial of multiplicity and/or plurality), and discrimination against non-human identities.

So I can't use this project to call out someone who believes they're literally a baby pony with several pony headmates. Okay, thank you. Move along, please.
