Also apparently based on this solo podcast episode there are notable KDE developers using AI that are afraid to speak out due to these people.
I am genuinely glad there's a pushback against these people from the tech industry in general.

Hyprland > GNOME and KDE. At some point you realize all you want is to display windows, and all the other bells and whistles you get with KDE and GNOME are superficial. Hyprland does window displaying and does it well.
Also I was astonished to see that everything in KDE's Polish translation is machine translated, with some parts being omitted from it. It's genuinely atrocious with how bad it is, feels like a half-baked toy and not one of the leading DE's on Linux. Meanwhile Mint feels like a complete product, since Cinnamon has actual native speaker contributors and translation maintainers. Fucking horrendous first impression. How does KDE, that got 1.2m€, can't find volunteers for translating KDE into Polish, but Cinnamon can? I know this won't affect most people but to me it's really fucking telling about the quality of KDE vs Cinnamon.
I'd say that once Mint ships with Cinnamon with Wayland as default, that'll be the point where it'll be the DE to choose. 90% of people won't need more than that, it'll work fine with Wayland given how much Mint cares about things just working so it'll survive the shit test once it's released to production, and both KDE and GNOME can compete in who will enshittify their DE more in the name of moving fast and breaking things. Then there'll be the nerds on Hyprland, i3, dwm and so on that only need a window renderer.

A software license without the legal or technical means to enforce it is just a meaningless text file anyway. You can choose to use the software and not obey with the terms, you can even erase it from your file system and the software will still work!

To be fair to GNOME and KDE, they're designed to be entire ecosystems, such as having a calculator, calendar, video player, you name it. Some of which, I really enjoy using, such as Nautilus, Gnome photo viewer and Gnome calculator.

IMO the only cross-DE programs that you'd need are control panels to not muck about in /etc every time you want to change some tiny setting, and the rest you could easily supply yourself, all on top of a base DE package. That's the best way to build your OS IMO, just have a base to plop your own shiz on. Cinnamon is also an entire ecosystem like GNOME or KDE of course, with it's own file manager, terminal and whatnot, yet they don't fuck things up nearly as bad as it isn't led by morons that can't see a use case for something that existed in every UI since the 80's, or morons that desperately want to be like the other morons, constantly breaking everything in the process.

Take the work, run it through a coding agent to translate it into the language of your choice, tweak it until it runs properly, and then slap GPL+NIGGER on it.

A better AI trap would be some wording of "if you train AI on this, you must release the trained model as open-weight and make it freely downloadable", to which the remedy is releasing the model.
